Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. For admission of older persons in a residential facility, you have to apply at any nearest older persons’ residential facility you already know or visit the nearest office of Department of Social Development to find the nearest residential facility.
2. You can visit the Department of Social Development office with the help of contact details link given below. Contact details for all the provinces in South Africa can be found in the following link:Link
3. Find the nearest older persons’ residential facility and pay a visit to the office of that facility. Obtain the application form for admission and please fill the application form as directed and required.
4. Confirm that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page. Now, attach the documents with the completed application form.
5. Then, submit the application form and required documents at the Residential Facility in order to get an admission.
6. After that, a screening test will be conducted for deciding whether the person (for whom admission is required) is suitable to be admitted in Residential Facility and eligible for receiving a subsidy.
7. Once when all the necessary processes are completed, the application form and required documents are forwarded to the concerned departments for proper scrutiny.
8. The Department of Social Development takes about a month for responding to the application. After a month, you will be informed about the approval or rejection of the application.
9. If your application is not approved, you must be given a reason in writing and you can appeal to the Minister of Social Development.

Eligibility

• Any elder person who is required to be taken care all the time can apply for an admission in an older persons’ residential facility.
• The person must have completed 60 years of age or more than that.
• The person must be destitute and should belong to South Africa.
• He/she must be receiving an old-age grant or pension.

Fees

• Costs may vary and you can get to know about the costs at the office.
  

Validity

Explain the time until which the certificate/document is valid.

Processing Time

• The application will be processed in a period of about 14 days from the date of application. And after the necessary verifications you will get a response within 30 days.

Instructions

• If the person for whom admission is sought for, is too old or sick that it is difficult for them to visit the office and apply, they can ask any of their family members or friends to apply on their behalf.
• In such cases, the office will arrange a social worker who will visit the older person’s home and assess their contemporary living conditions.

Need for the Document

• This admission is required to get an older person admitted in a Residential facility and looked after with appropriate care.
  

Information which might help

• The older person who is going to be admitted in a Residential facility must give their consent for the concerned action and this consent can be refrained only when a court order, issued based on a medical report that specifies the mental inability of the person, is provided.
• In case of emergency and time lapse in the court order issuance, a report certified by a registered medical practitioner can suffice the court order.
