- If you are a new driver you will need to go to a training programme for drivers of motor vehicles. The program has two part, theoretical and practical training.
- The theoretical part will require the applicant to sit in a total of 20 hours of lessons which includes the following:
- road traffic rules, road signs and their meanings
- road safety
- obligations and role of drivers
- importance of the identification and anticipation of traffic and related risk factors
- changes in behaviour and the behaviour of the driver in traffic due to the influence of alcohol, drugs and psychoactive drugs, fatigue, disease and other mental and physical conditions and due to weather conditions, the condition of the vehicle and the road, which affects the safety of traffic;
- The practical part of the programme consists of at least 20 hours of training spent:
- getting to know the vehicle and learning the basic elements of the art of driving
- learning how to drive under different scenarios (heavy traffic, night, day)
- learning the basics of the techniques of energy-saving and environmentally friendly driving.
- The required minimum hours for both parts of the programme may be lessen if the applicant is already a driving licence holder and applying for another category.
- After an applicant has completed the theoretical part of the programme he/she may apply to take theoretical driver's test. Applicants will need to pass this test in order to proceed to the practical part of the programme.
- Once you are done with the practical training part of the program, you may now apply to take the practical driving test. If you are enrolled in a driving school, your school will help you with your application.

EligibilityEdit
A driving licence is issued for driving motor vehicles and their trailers, which are grouped into categories, on which the prescribed completed age of the driver depends:
- AM, prescribed age 15 years (mopeds and light quad-cycles);
- A1, prescribed age 16 years (motor bikes on two wheels with a side-car or without it; the engine capacity not exceeding 125 cc and engine power not exceeding 11 kW; with the ratio of the engine power/vehicle mass not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg; and tricycles with engine power not exceeding 15 Kw);
- A2, prescribed age 18 years (motorcycles with engine power not exceeding 35 kW and the ratio between the engine power and vehicle mass not exceeding 0.2 kW/kg and not derived from a vehicle with once higher power);
- A, prescribed age 24 years or 20 years if the candidate has the licence for category A2 for 2 years (motorcycles on two wheels with a side-car or without it) and prescribed age 21 years (motor-powered tricycles with the engine power above 15 kW);
- B, prescribed age 18 years (passenger vehicles with mass not exceeding 3500 kg and maximum 9 = 8 + 1 seats);
- BE, prescribed age of 18 years (passenger vehicles B with trailers of maximum authorised mass exceeding 750 kg and the total mass of the trailer and the passenger vehicle exceeding 3500 kg of load - driving licence of category B is prerequisite);
- B1, light four-wheel vehicles, prescribed age 16 years (light four-wheel vehicles with mass less than 400 kg if they are intended for the transport of passengers and 550kg if they are intended for transport);
- C, prescribed age 21 years (freight vehicles with total mass exceeding 3500 kg with a maximum of 9 = 8 + 1 seats of load - driving licence of category B is prerequisite);
- CE, prescribed age 21 (freight vehicles C with trailers the total mass of which exceeds 750 kg of load - driving licence of category CE is prerequisite);
- C1, prescribed age 18 years (freight vehicles with mass exceeding 3500 kg and less than 7500 kg with a maximum of 9 = 8 + 1 seats of load - driving licence of category B is prerequisite);
- C1E, prescribed age 18 years (freight vehicles between 3500 kg and 7500 kg with a trailer the total mass of which exceeds 750 kg - the total mass of the vehicle and the trailer must not exceed 12.000 kg of load - driving licence of category C1 is prerequisite);
- D, prescribed age 24 years (passenger carrying vehicles which have, apart from the driver's seat, more than 8 seats of load - the prerequisite is at least a 3 years old driving licence for category B or driving licence C or D1);
- DE, prescribed age 24 (vehicles of category C with trailers the total mass of which exceeds 750 kg of load - driving licence of category D is prerequisite);
- D1, prescribed age 21 years (passenger carrying vehicles which have, apart from the driver's seat, maximum 16 seats and are not longer than 8 metres of load - the prerequisite is at least a 3 years old driving licence for category B or driving licence C or C1);
- D1E, prescribed age 21 (vehicles of category D1 with trailers the total mass of which exceeds 750 kg - driving licence of category D1 is prerequisite);
- F, prescribed age 16 years (tractors and tractor trailers the speed of which does not exceed 40 km/h) or 18 years (tractors and tractor trailers the speed of which exceeds 40 km/h);
- G, prescribed age 15 years (tillers) or 18 years (working machinery).
The prescribed age to obtain the right to drive vehicles of categories C, CE, D and DE can also be 18 or 21 years if you have a certificate certifying the initial qualification of professional drivers.

Before a licence is issued to you, the following conditions must be fulfilled first:
- you have permanent or temporary residence in the Republic of Slovenia for more than 6 months;
- you are mentally and physically capable of driving a motor vehicle;
- you have reached the prescribed age for driving motor vehicles;
- before a competent commission, you have passed a driving test or a course on safe work with tractor and tractor attachments, if the issue of a driving licence for driving motor vehicles of category F is considered;
- your driving licence has not been withdrawn or suspended;
- a penalty or protective measure of prohibition from driving certain types or categories of motor vehicles has not been imposed on you;
- a prohibition of issuing a driving licence in respect of a measure withdrawing a driving licence has not been imposed on you;
- you have settled the costs related to the issuance of the driving licence, such as the cost of the driving licence form, the cost of the application etc.).
