- Church wedding
- The essential characteristic of canonical marriages is, at least in the Christian churches, the sacrament of marriage is viewed more seriously than in the case of civil marriage. While the civil marriage while meeting the legal conditions can be completed even though many times in a lifetime, a Christian practitioner may, pursuant to the principle of "What God has joined together, let man not distribute" the union of a married only once, because the Church understands marriage as a lifetime promise. Exception is the second death of spouse, or some specific circumstances allowing ecclesiastical separation of marriage, which are always very thoroughly investigated.
- Declaration of marriage do engaged couples before pursuing activities spiritual registered church or religious society as competent authorities.
- Marriage before the body of the church is concluded in church or at another suitable place designated by the internal regulations of the church or religious society for religious ceremonies or religious acts.
- If life is one of the betrothed directly threatened, the marriage may be concluded at any suitable location.
- Body of the church, before the marriage contract is required within three working days to deliver the record of the marriage registration office in whose jurisdiction the marriage was celebrated.
- Preparation of church marriage
- The term canonical marriages need to agree to the parish office at least two or three months in advance (depending on the size of the ecclesial community, sometimes it can be even six months or more in advance) to allow sufficient time for preparatory meetings with the priest, which is one of conditions for the conclusion of canonical marriages. These meetings is usually 6 and are held frequently in the parish where the ceremony will take place. If they are both engaged couples of the same religion, they should all be carried easily.
- As one of the betrothed and his unbelieving partner wants to have a church wedding though, the competent priest to ask for the special privilege of the bishop of his diocese (called. Dispensation). No exception is when regarding the planned conclusion of the marriage one of the spouses converts to confess your partner.
- Civil marriage
- Declaration of marriage do engaged couples to register office designated for the circuit in which one of them resides, before the mayor or the mayor or designated Members of the municipal council or municipal council in the presence of the registrar.
- Registry office concerned under the preceding paragraph may permit marriage in another Registry Office or at any other suitable place.
- If life is one of the betrothed directly threatened, the marriage may be concluded before any registry office and at any place. Enabling the registry office is required in this case.
- Engaged at the marriage approvingly declare that they have no knowledge of excluding marriage and that they know their health.
Required DocumentsEdit
A Slovak citizen shall submit:
- birth certificate
- proof of citizenship
- proof of address (permanent residence in Slovakia)
- death certificate of a deceased spouse if he/she is widowed, or a divorce decree if he/she is divorced person, or a court decision on an annulment of a previous marriage
- proof of a personal identification number (given to Slovak citizens at birth)
A foreigner is obliged to submit the following documents to the locally competent Registry Office not later than 14 days prior to the wedding ceremony:
- birth certificate this document shall include personal data of a foreigner - date and a place of birth as well as the personal data of his/her parents. If the birth certificate does not include personal data of both parents, the marriage certificate of the parents will be required;
- a document which proves the legal capacity of the foreigner to enter into a marriage; such a document is an evidence of the fact, that there are no legal impediments which would prevent this person marrying and must include: name, surname, date and a place of birth, citizenship, address of permanent residence, marital status, and and affirmation that the foreigner has a legal capacity to conclude a marriage pursuant to the legislation of the home country. (This information can be included in more than one document) This document will be issued by the Registry Office of the foreigner's country of origin or, in some countries, such documents can be issued by embassies;
- proof of citizenship valid passport;
- proof of residence;
- proof of marital status (see point no. 2);
- death certificate of a deceased spouse if the foreigner is widowed;
- divorce decree if the foreigner is divorced (or a court decision about the annulment of a previous marriage);
- ID/passport.
Documents must be translated into Slovak by an official translator certified by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic, translated documents must be signed by the certified translator and must include a round seal.
All documents shall be submitted to the locally competent Registry Office regardless of the place of the wedding ceremony. If any of the spouses does not speak or understand Slovak language, the presence of an official court interpreter is required at the wedding ceremony.
If submitting any specific document is hindered by an especially difficult obstruction, the Registry Office can accept its replacement with an affidavit of the couple.

Civil and Religious Weddings in the Slovak Republic are fully recognized by respective legal systems for all the nationalities from around the world.
A Slovak citizen can marry a foreigner in Slovakia or in a foreign country. Marriage on a Slovak embassy is possible only if both fiances are Slovaks.

- Religious wedding ceremony in a church The wedding vows must be read by the couple to each other in the presence of a priest of the registered Church. The religious body will send the marriage certificate to the locally competent Registry Office within 3 days following the wedding.
- Marriage cannot be concluded with a married man or a married woman; In such a case, the court of its own motion decides that marriage is invalid. Court has ruled on the invalidity of the marriage and the marriage becomes valid if the earlier marriage has been dissolved or if the court decided that the earlier marriage is invalid.
- Marriage cannot be concluded between ancestors and descendants and siblings; the same is true of kin-based adoption. In such a case, the court of its own motion decides that marriage is invalid.
- Marriage cannot be concluded with a minor. Court may, in accordance with the purpose of marriage exceptionally authorize the marriage of a minor older than 16 years. Without the permission of the court marriage is invalid. In such a case, the court of its own motion decides that marriage is invalid. Court has ruled on the invalidity of the marriage and the marriage becomes valid if the husband or wife, who was at the time of marriage a minor older than 16 years, it has reached 18 years, or if the wife became pregnant.
- Marriage cannot be concluded with a person deprived of legal capacity. A person whose legal capacity is limited, may marry only with the permission of the court.
- Marriage cannot be concluded with a person with a mental disorder, which should result in a restriction of legal capacity. However, the court may marry such a person be allowed if the health status compatible with the purpose of marriage.
- If you marry a person deprived of legal capacity or a person who suffers from a mental disorder that would result in deprivation of legal capacity, the court decides that the marriage is invalid without a draft.
- If without the permission of the court marries a person whose legal capacity is limited, or a person with a mental disorder, which should result in a restriction of legal capacity, the court shall rule on the invalidity of a marriage proposal from a spouse. Court has ruled on the invalidity of the marriage and the marriage becomes valid if the health of her husband became compatible with the purpose of marriage.
- Marriage is invalid if a declaration of marriage was not made freely, seriously, clearly and transparently. The fact that this marriage is invalid, the court will decide, on a proposal husband. Right husband to initiate proceedings for nullity of marriage shall expire after one year from the date when grounds for the nullity learned.

Marriage is a union of a man and women who formed the basis of their voluntary and free decision to marry, the purpose of which is to create a harmonious and sustainable community life. In the traditional understanding of marriage is the most important function of starting a family and ensure the proper upbringing of children.
According to the Slovak law, marriage is an interpersonal relationship of a man and a woman concluded either during a civil wedding ceremony at a Registry Office or a religious wedding ceremony in a church, in the presence of two wedding witnesses. During such a wedding ceremony the couple accepts each other as a wife and a husband willingly, with free consent and without any coercion.
