Singapore - Exchange Or Transfer Your Foreign Driving License

Step 1: To Exchange or Transfer Your Foreign Driving License, the applicant has to approach the Singapore Police Force for information contact link or the applicant should try any of the three training centres that are mentioned below;

Step 2: The applicant must first complete a Basic Theory Test (BTT) which ensures they understand the Singaporean road rules.
- The candidate can choose and book from a list of test dates, timings and locations, depending on availability at any one of the above-mentioned training centres.
- A candidate must produce:
- An identity card (Passport and Singapore green card)
- Basic Theory booking slip/receipt
Step 3: After the successful completion of test, the applicant can immediately apply for conversion of license to the traffic police licensing department – contact link
- The apply must carry all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- There the authorised officer will review application and process the exchange or transfer of foreign driving license.
Required DocumentsEdit
For Singapore citizen:
- Valid licence (If the licence does not show the date on which it was first issued, the Traffic Police may have to contact the issuing authority. A foreign licence must be translated if it is not in English)
- Confirmation of residence in the country of issue for a continuous period of six months (a passport and other official documents will be needed),
- Confirmation that the foreign driving licence was obtained during the period in the issuing country
- Proof of stay in Singapore
- The result slip from the Basic Theory Test
- One passport-size colour photograph with white background
For foreigners:
- Overseas students must produce proof of six months' stay in the country, (for example, educational transcripts or Letter of Acceptance into the Educational Institution) and the relevant visa in the passport
- Those employed overseas must produce a Letter of Employment or Income Tax Returns or supporting documents from your employer and the relevant Employment Pass in the passport
- For Malaysian licence holders, an extract from Jabatan Pengangutan Jalan (JPJ) is compulsory

EligibilityEdit
- For Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents
- If you are a citizen or permanent resident (PR), you can drive in Singapore only after you obtain a driving licence.
- You must convert as soon as possible your foreign driving licence to a locally issued one if you want to drive around Singapore.
- For New Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents
- applicant will be allowed to convert your foreign driving licences within 3 months of obtaining citizenship or PR status.
- For Foreigners
- If you are staying in Singapore for a short period, i.e. you hold a short-term social visit pass, you do not need to convert to a Singapore licence to drive in Singapore.
- You must possess a valid foreign licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by an authorised body in your own country, example the Automobile Association (AA). If an IDP is not available, an official translation of your foreign licence in English is required.
- Drivers from ASEAN member countries only need to possess a valid driving licence issued by their licensing authority in order to drive in Singapore without an IDP.
- To continue driving in Singapore after 12 months of staying here (from the date of your last entry into Singapore), you must obtain a valid Singapore driving licence.

- Laws relating to the issuance of licenses vary between jurisdictions.
- If you possess a driver's license issued abroad, better check first if you need to convert your foreign driving license to a Singapore driving license before you begin driving around the country.
Information which might helpEdit
- Some countries grant complementary licenses, e.g. a motorcycle license that is issued along with a new motorcar license. Such licences cannot be converted into a Singapore license. You must take riding lessons in Singapore and pass the relevant theory and practical riding test before you will be allowed to ride or drive.
