Apply Online(Through domestic route)
There are two routes for applying for a patent in Singapore
- Domestic route
- PCT National Phase Entry route
You may use the services of a registered patent agent to assist with the submission of patent application. In Domestic route, the following steps have to be followed.
- File the patent application online through the link:online link
- Click on “Login” button. Then, choose “login with singpass” or “login with corpass”. Register if you don’t have an account. Log into your account by typing the credentials.
- Fill in the application form with required details and upload the required documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Pay the required application fees through any payment mode and submit it.
- If the claims are not ready for submission at the point of filing the patent application and if you desire to have an early filing date for your invention, you may file a provisional application.
- After the filing requirements are satisfied, the Registry of Patents will give a Date of Filing.
- If the filing requirements are not satisfied, you will receive notification from the Registrar to provide what is lacking within 2 months period. Your application will be abandoned if you are unable to submit in time.
- The Registrar will conduct a preliminary examination on your application, when the claims are submitted within the specified time and filing fee is paid.
- The preliminary examination ensures that the claim is correct, there are no missing drawings or part of description and the application complies with all requirements.
- If the requirements for preliminary examination are not complied with, you will be notified by the Registrar to make changes in the application within 2 months period. If you fail to do so, itwill result in refusal of your application.
- The details of your patent application will get published in the Patents Journal after 18 months.
- The patent examiners will search for similar inventions made earlier in the same field as your patent. They are called as prior art.
- Then, they will examine and compare the prior art (previous similar invention) to your patent application and determine if the prior art removes the novelty of your patent application.
- The patent examiner will also examine if the other criteria for patent (such as inventive step and industrial application) are satisfied..
- You can choose one of the four search and examination routes mentioned below.
- Search within 13 months + Examination within 36 months
- Combined search and examination within 36 months
- Examination within 36 months
- Supplementary examinationwithin 54 months
- After completion of the search and examination process, an examination report or a supplementary examination report will be given to you. The examination report will have the details of the patent examiners’ opinion on the ability of your patent application to be registered.
- If there are no unresolved objections, you will be given a Notice of Eligibility to Proceed to Grant.
- If there are one or more unresolved objections, you should respond within 5 months (for examination) or 3 months (for supplementary examination).
- A response can be in one of the following ways
- Written submissions on the patent examiner's opinion;
- An amendment of the patent specification; or
- Both of the above
- The opinion written subsequently (except for supplementary examination) may be given until all outstanding issues surrounding the patent application is resolved.
- If the outstanding issues are not resolved within 18 months from the date of the first written opinion, you will get a Notice of Intention to Refuse from the Registry of Patents.
- You should file a request for the issuance of the Certificate of Grant within 2 months immediately after the Notice of Eligibility to Proceed to Grant.
- If any amendments or corrections were made to the original specification, you have to submit a set of consolidated specificationsalong with the request for the issuance of the Certificate of Grant.
- After the request is filed and the conditions for grant are met, the Registrar will issue the Certificate of Grant to you.
- If you don’t file the request, the patent application shall be abandoned and the Registrar will notify you by letter.
Apply Online (Through PCT National phase route)
There are two routes for applying for a patent in Singapore
- a.Domestic route
- b.PCT National Phase Entry route
You may use the services of a registered patent agent to assist with the submission of patent application. The other route is the PCT route. The Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT) is administered by the International Bureau of WIPO (IB). It is an international treaty to provide patent protection for an invention in many countries simultaneously through one application with a single office. The following steps need to be followed Your application should be submitted within 30 months along with the required documents.
- You can submit through the online link:online link
- If you already have an account, log in by typing the “Username” and “Password” and clicking on the “Login” button.
- Otherwise click on “Create WIPO account”, provide the required details and click on “ Create an account”
- Fill in the application form with required details and upload the required documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Pay the required application fees through any payment mode and submit it.
- If the necessary information is not present, the Registrar will send a notification to you, who will have 2 months from the date of the notification to give what is lacking. Your application will be withdrawn if you are not able to submit the requirements in time.
- The patent examiners will search for similar inventions made earlier in the same field as your patent. They are called as prior art.
- Then, they will examine and compare the prior art (previous similar invention) to your patent application and determine if the prior art removes the novelty of your patent application.
- The patent examiner will also examine if the other criteria for patent (such as inventive step and industrial application) are satisfied..

- After the request is filed and the conditions for grant are met, the Registrar will issue the Certificate of Grant to you.

Apply Online (overseas)
There are two routes for applying for a patent overseas
- a.File patent applications in other countries according to their procedure
- b.PCT route
- If you are a Singapore resident, you should obtain written authorisation from IPOS before filing an application for a patent outside of Singapore, called asNational Security Clearance.
- For filing an international application under PCT with IPOS, you have to be a resident or national of Singapore. Possession of a real and effective industrial or commercial establishment is considered as a proof of residence in Singapore
- You can submit the international application through the online link:online link
- If you already have an account, log in by typing the “Username” and “Password” and clicking on the “Login” button.
- Otherwise click on “Create WIPO account”, provide the required details and click on “ Create an account”
- Fill in the application form with required details and upload the required documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Pay the required application fees through any payment mode and submit it.
- International Filing Date will be given to the International Application
- International Search Report (ISR) and an International Preliminary Report on Patentability Chapter I (IPRP (I)) are issued
- In the 18th month, the International Application will be published with the ISR
- Applicant will file a demand with a competent International Preliminary Examination Authority (IPEA) which is optional
- International Preliminary Report on Patentability Chapter II (IPRP (II)) will be issued
- In the 30th month, Applicant will enter the National Phase. The steps for PCT national phase are mentioned above.

When application is made in Singapore through domestic route the following documents are required:
- Application form
- Application fee of S$160/-
- Description of the invention: It must have at least one way of carrying out the invention claimed and drawings, if any (in black & white or grayscale)
- Claims, if ready
- Abstract of the invention
When application is made in Singapore through PCT route the following documents are required:
- Application form
- Application fee: S$200/-
- Singapore has been designated in the PCT International Application
- If the PCT International Application is not in English, a translation of the application into English and a verification of the translation must be enclosed along with the application.

EligibilityEdit
- The applicant should be a Singapore citizen and Singapore resident
- For an invention to be patentable, certain criteria need to be satisfied:
- New – The invention must not be known publicly in any way in the world. The invention has to be kept secret until a patent application has been successfully made.
- Inventive step – The invention could be an improvement over any existing product or process. It should not be obvious to anyone with technical skills or knowledge in the field of the invention.
- Industrial application – The invention should be useful and should have some form of practical application. It should have capability to be used in some industry.
