Need for the DocumentEdit
The government of Singapore grants working parents with at least one child who is a Singapore Citizen under the age of 7 years, 6 days of paid child care leave every year. The first 3 days are employer-paid, and the last 3 days are Government-paid (capped at $500 per day, inclusive of CPF contributions).
Government-Paid Child Care Leave (GPCL)
GPCL applies if your youngest child is under the age of 7 years. The government grants parents up to 6 days of child care leave per calendar year by default or any 12-month period (relevant period) agreed between you and your employer, a total of 42 days of child care leave for a child below the age of 7 years.
Pro-rated child care leave
Employees who do not serve the full 12 months in the "relevant period" (i.e. either the calendar year or any 12-month period mutually agreed between the employer and employee) will be eligible for pro-rated child care leave, subject to a minimum of 2 days. Child care leave is pro-rated according to your length of service as follows:
- Length of service with employer during relevant period - Number of days of childcare leave
- Not less than 3 months but less than 5 months - 2 days
- Not less than 5 months but less than 7 months - 3 days
- Not less than 7 months but less than 9 months - 4 days
- Not less than 9 months but less than 11 months - 5 days
- Not less than 11 months - 6 days
However, if your employer agrees to give you all 6 days of child care leave without pro-rating, the Government will reimburse your employer as long as your child care leave for the 12-month period does not exceed 6 days. Do note that these 6 days will still count towards your total of 42 days. Medical certificate will not be required of you and the Government will reimburse your employer (or you if you are self-employed) for up to 3 days of child care leave a year.
Extended child care leave benefits
The government allows working parents to spend more quality time with their children and care for them, by enhancing child care leave provisions. If your youngest child is a Singapore Citizen and aged between 7 and 12 years inclusive, parents will be entitled to 2 days of government-paid child care leave a year. Pro-ration does not apply in these type of benefit. Employees are not required to submit Medical certificate, government will reimburse the employer (or you if you are self-employed) 2 days of extended child care leave a year capped at $500 per day (inclusive of CPF contributions)
