Senegal - Obtain a Motor Insurance

1.If an applicant wishes to obtain a comprehensive motor insurance policy bigger than the third party insurance, he / she starts by deciding on which insurance policy he / she should obtain for his / her vehicle. In this case the applicant in addition to liabilities covered by third party insurance decides on other liabilities for which his / her vehicle should be insured against and thus looks for a motor insurance policy that caters for all that he / she wants in addition to third party insurance.
2.After the above, the applicant goes ahead to find an authorized and appropriate insurance company that offers the desire motor insurance policy. At this stage the applicant must carry out a comprehensive search to ensure that the chosen company is authorized to proved the desire services and that is approved by Confrence Interafricaine des Marchs d'Assurances (CIMA)A list of insurance companies in Senegal can viewed at

3.Thereafter the applicant goes to the identified insurance company with all the necessary documents to obtain the desired insurance policy.
4.At the insurance company, the applicant submits application with necessary documents and when documents are received, they are reviewed and assessed to see if they meet all the requirements;
5.If approved, the applicant makes any necessary payments;
6.The insurance company thereafter grants insurance policy to the applicants and the Attestation DAssurance is issued as proof that the vehicle is insured as required;

1.Applicants must know that third party insurance is compulsory in Senegal;
2.Any motor insurance policy purchased must include or be in addition to third party insurance;
3.Applicant must renew insurance upon expiration;
4.An applicant choose the most appropriate motor insurance policy that caters for liabilities he / she wishes to insure vehicle against;
5.Applicants are advised to ensure that they contact authorized insurance companies for the desired insurance policy;
6.Ensure that the contacted company has approval from CIMA;
7.Applicants must take note of existence of fraud in the country;
8.An applicant must not give false information;
9.Applicants are argued to read and understand the details of chosen insurance policies i.e. what it does and what it does not cater for;
10.Liabilities that occur out of the incurred activities are not always catered for;
11.Always renew insurance before it expires;

Motor insurance is also known as gap insurance, auto insurance, vehicle insurance, or car insurance is purchased for any kind of vehicle for provision of financial protection against physical and bodily damages resulting from accidents and against other liabilities that may arise.
In Senegal third part insurance is compulsory for all vehicles therefore which have insurance policy purchased must be in addition or must include the third party insurance and Attestation DAssurance should be issued for any insurance policy purchased. The insurance industry in the country is regulated by the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Plan with guidelines from the regional insurance law, imposed by Confrence Interafricaine des Marchs d'Assurances (CIMA) which is a Regional body of the insurance industry for fourteen (14) countries in Francophone Africa of which Senegal inclusive.
