Obtaining a national identity card

  1. Gather all documents needed to be presented to obtain a national identity card.
  2. Fill up and submit the application form.
  3. Pay all necessary fees.
  4. The applicant must personally collect his/her national identity card.


Renewing your national identity card

  1. Gather all documents needed to be presented to renew a national identity card.
  2. Fill up and submit the application form.
  3. Pay all necessary fees.
  4. The applicant must personally collect the new national identity card.


Lost or stolen national identity card

You may request a duplicate copy of your national identity card, in case your ID card was stolen or lost. Immediately report the incident to the police or gendarmerie and obtain a certificate of loss, you will need this document when you request for a duplicate copy of your national identity card.

Required DocumentsEdit

To obtain a national identity card

  • The former national identity card or a birth certificate (not older than 3 months) or in lieu thereof, the former ECOWAS passport, the new ECOWAS passport scanned. Citizens may present a former national identity card if it has been established since 1979 or a birth certificate dated not more than 5 years.


Notes:

  • In case there is doubt about the nationality of the applicant, a certificate of nationality must also be presented.
  • For individuals wearing glasses, a prescription or a medical certificate must be presented when applying for a national identity card.


To renew your national identity card

  • The old identity card (digital)
  • A discharge of 1,000 FCFA


For lost or stolen national identity card

  • A birth certificate (not older than 3 months)
  • Certificate of loss
  • A discharge of 6,000 FCFA

EligibilityEdit

  • Senegalese citizens who are at least 5 years old. For people aged between 5 and 15 years old, obtaining a national identity card is not mandatory. It is still necessary to obtain a passport.
  • Possessing a national identity card is mandatory for Senegalese citizens aged 15 and up.

During revision of electoral rolls, stamp or discharge will be:

  • In Senegal and countries of the Franc Zone: 500 FCFA
  • In Europe: 1 Euro
  • Other countries: $ 1 (U.S)

Applications to obtain a national identity card are submitted to the police, the gendarmerie or the prefecture or sub-prefecture cover the area where the applicant resides.

Applications may also be submitted to the administrative commissions on electoral lists established by decree.

Need for the DocumentEdit

A national identity card is a national document that may be presented by a citizen to identify himself. Senegalese citizens who are at least 5 years old may apply to obtain a national identity card. Possessing a national identity card is mandatory for those aged 15 and up.

A citizen must be able to present his/her national identity card during checks by the security forces. If, during an identity check, a person over 15 years can not submit his/her national identity card, the citizen may be taken to the police station for inspection. If a person older than 15 years do not have a national identity card or in possession of an expired national identity card, the citizen may be asked to pay a fine of FCFA 6,000, or 12,000 FCFA in case of the incident will happen again.
