Apply In-Person:
- To apply for Variety Registration in person, the applicant has to visit the office of the Variety Registration Office in the Pre-market Submissions Office.

- The applicant has to visit the office and obtain a Variety Registration Application (CFIA/ACIA 5700) form from the respective department.
- The form can also be downloaded by clicking the following Application form
- The applicant has to complete the application with details and information as required in the application form.
- After completing, it should be attested with the applicant’s signature. Then, all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this, should be attached with the completed application form.
- Also, the applicant has to complete and submit a Variety Registration Fee Submission form which can be found in the following Fee Submission form
- The applicant should pay an amount of $875.00 for the submission and application processing which should also accompany this completed form.
- More details regarding fees and payment can be found in the “Fees” section of this page as well as in the link below Fees details
- After making sure that all the required documents and appropriate fees have been attached, the applicant can visit the office and submit the application to the relevant official at the office.
- Upon receipt of the application package and appropriate fees, the Office will start assessing the application and attached documents.
- The Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis. It takes 30 to 120 days for the completion of processing and issuance of the registration certificate, based on the availability of the required information/documents.
- When the Registration Certificate is ready, the applicant will be informed through phone call or email address or any applicable means.
- The applicant can collect the Certificate through any applicable means or as instructed by the office.
Apply through mail/courier
- To apply for Variety Registration through mail/courier, the applicant has to a paper application to the address of the Variety Registration Office in the Pre-market Submissions Office.
- First, the applicant has to download the application form by clicking the following Application form
- The applicant has to complete the application with details and information as required in the application form.
- After completing, it should be attested with the applicant’s signature. Then, all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this, should be attached with the completed application form.
- Also, the applicant has to complete and attach a Variety Registration Fee Submission form which can be found in the following Fee Submission form
- The applicant should pay an amount of $875.00 for the submission and application processing which should also accompany this completed form.

- A properly tagged and sealed reference sample of the variety (or in the case of potato varieties, photographic slides/digital images) should also accompany the application package.
- Then, they should send the complete application package and sample to the following address: Variety Registration Office, c/o Pre-market Application Submissions Office, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, 59, Camelot Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0Y9.
- Upon receipt of the application package and appropriate fees, the Office will start assessing the application and attached documents.

- Any Breeder or Variety Owner, who needs to register a new variety of Barley, Canola, Rapeseed, Fababean, Oat, Potato, Soybean, Wheat, durum, spelt and triticale, can apply.
- A representative, who has been authorized by the owner or breeder, can also apply.

- In order to facilitate the evaluation process, applications should be submitted as far as possible in advance of the desired period of sale or importation for sale.
- Some forms contain a button which enhances the applicant to send the form by email. The form is sent using whatever email service or software they have configured on their computer.
- If they are using a web mail service (vs. email client software) and have not configured their email service to function with "mail to" links, the button may not function.
- In such cases, they can save the file, and send the file as an attachment using whatever functionality their computer configuration and email provider supplies.
- In order to avoid unnecessary delays in the registration process, please ensure that all pertinent information and note that applications will not be reviewed prior to receipt of appropriate fees.
- Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) PDF forms have been tested for compatibility with Adobe Reader 10 and higher and may not be fully supported in other PDF viewers and on some mobile devices.

- The purpose of variety registration is to provide government oversight to ensure that health and safety requirements are met and that information related to the identity of the variety is available to regulators to prevent fraud.
- It also facilitates seed certification, the international trade of seed and the tracking and tracing of varieties in commercial channels.

- Canadian trademark search is not required to be submitted as part of the application for registration. Applicants are required to sign a declaration that they have not applied for or trademarked the name, or any part of the name, of that variety and the declaration is found in the Variety Registration Application Form (page 1).
- However, the Trademarks Office of Industry Canada strongly suggests that applicants have a trademark search conducted in order to identify potential trademark infringements.
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is committed to protecting the privacy rights of individuals, including safeguarding the confidentiality of information provided by individuals and institutions.
- Submission of personal information constitutes the user’s consent to the collection, use, storage, and disclosure of their personal information by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
- This information is being collected and used under this Agency's legislative authority for the following purposes: Variety Registration in accordance with the Seeds Act Seeds Act
- This information will be retained for a period of 7 years after last use in accordance with the Agency's retention and disposition policies.
