Apply Online

  1. To apply for Maternity and parental benefits, the applicant will need to submit the application form online, this must be done as soon as possible, find further information under the “Instructions” section of this page.
  2. Click on the following link to the application form Link
  3. Click on the “Start application” button under “Step 3”
  4. Read the Privacy notice statement and click on “Start application” button.
  5. Answer the questions when prompted and click on “Continue”.
  6. Under “What type of Employment Insurance benefits would you like to claim?”, click on the “Benefits for employees” option and click on “Continue”.
  7. Under the next question; “Are you part….(including layoffs due to a natural disaster)...this application?” click on “No” and then click on “Continue”.
  8. If the applicant clicked on the “No” option then under “What type of benefits are you applying for?”, choose the “Maternity Benefits” option and tick the square box for “I confirm that I'm pregnant or have recently given birth” option or the “Parental Benefits” option depending on the option that applies to the applicant. Click on “Continue”.
  9. Read the instructions carefully and click on “Continue”.
  10. The applicant will be directed to the application page, enter all the relevant details and click on “Continue”.
  11. The applicant will need to enter details of employers as well as their bank information, once all details have been entered, click on “Submit”.
  12. The applicant will need to send additional documents, by mail or submit them to a service Canada Centre.
  13. Once the application and the documents have been submitted, the applicant shall receive a benefit statement and four-digit code by email.
  14. The applicant will need this code and their Social Insurance Number to track their application.
  15. The applicant can track their application from the Service Canada Centre or MSCA account.


Creating a My Service Canada Account (MSCA)

  1. The applicant will have to register for a My Service Canada Account (MSCA). If the applicant has an account login, they can login using their credentials. If the applicant does not have an account, follow these steps:
    • To create an account, click on the following Link.
    • Scroll to the bottom and under the “New User” option, click on the option the applicant would like to register using.
    • Click on “Start now”.
    • The applicant will need to enter all the relevant details such as username, password, bank details and so on and the account will be created.
    • The applicant can track their application using their MSCA account.

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • If the applicant's SIN starts with a “9”, they will need to submit immigration documents.
  • Details about expected or actual date of birth.
  • Record of employment

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant should be pregnant and demonstrate that they have recently given birth.
  • The applicant is a parent caring for their newly adopted child or newborn.
  • The applicant’s regular weekly earnings have been reduced by more than 40% for a week.

FeesEdit

  • The applicant does not need to pay any fees to obtain EI Caregiving Benefits.
  • Before the applicant starts receiving their benefits, there is a one week waiting period, this is deductible as in any type of insurance.



ValidityEdit

  • The benefits are valid until the person requiring care no longer needs it.

Processing TimeEdit

  • The applicant shall start receiving benefits after 28 days from the submission of the application.
  • There is a one week waiting period before the applicant starts receiving money, this is like the deductible that is paid for other types of insurance.
