Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Approval under the Navigable Waters Protection Act in person, the applicant has to visit the nearest regional office of the Navigation Protection Program.

  3. The applicant can contact the office to obtain information on how to apply for Approval under the Navigable Waters Protection Act.
  4. The official, who is in charge of receiving applications for the Navigation Protection Program’s approval, will inform the applicant about the requirements for the approval.
  5. The applicant will have to complete an application form for the approval, with required details about the concerned project.
  6. Also, the applicant should provide the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  7. The applicant should complete the application form and attach all the required documents with it.
  8. The applicant can contact the office for fees details and enclose the required fees or payment receipt with the application package.
  9. Then, the application package should be submitted to the relevant official at the office. After submission, the NPP will assess the application and attached documents.
  10. The office will also verify whether the proposed project requires an application and the application is complete with all the required information.
  11. After assessment, the office will inform the applicant what are all the additional requirements for the process.
  12. Then, parallel reviews such as an environmental review and indigenous peoples of Canada consultations may be required.
  13. On completion of the review and consultation, the office will demand the applicant to release a public notice.
  14. On the notice, the office will invite the public to comment on the proposed project for a specific period.
  15. Upon completion of all the necessary processes, the applicant will be informed through email or mail to collect the approval.
  16. Meanwhile, the applicant can contact the office to know the status of their application.


Apply online

  1. To apply for Approval under the Navigable Waters Protection Act online, the applicant has to visit the following link Apply online
  2. Visit the link and click the “Sign in” button if there is already an account for the applicant. Enter the user details in the fields provided and click “Sign in” button.
  3. If the applicant is new to the site, click “Register” button to create a new account. Enter the email address and create a new password for the account.
  4. Click “Register” button and an email would have been sent to the provided email address for confirmation. Click the link provided in the email for confirming the email address.
  5. After confirming, sign in by entering the user details in the fields provided and clicking “Sign in” button. The next step is to create a new contact in the site.
  6. Enter all the details required in Contact Creation page and click “Create Contact” button. In the next page, some common information about the program and the site would have displayed.
  7. To apply for an approval, the applicant should click the “Application for approval” button which is present on the left side of the page.
  8. Please read the instructions provided and click “Create a new application for approval” button which is present below.
  9. The online application form will be opened further, in which the applicant should provide all the details as required by following the on screen instructions.
  10. Complete all the sections one by one and provide appropriate information under each section. Also upload the required documents in the documents section by clicking the applicable button.
  11. Then, authorize the submitted information as applicable and submit the application by clicking the applicable button once authorized.
  12. After submission, the NPP will assess the application and attached documents. The office will also verify whether the proposed project requires an application and the application is complete with all the required information.
