ProcedureEdit

  • Apply for the marriage license in person at a ZAG office.
  • Present proof of age and identity. A driver's license, state-issued birth certificate or passport are acceptable forms of identification for this purpose. Applicants may also be asked to provide Social Security numbers.
  • Complete the application and sign it in front of the county clerk. If this is not possible, any adult or the other applicant may apply on behalf of the absent applicant. Contact the local ZAG clerk for additional requirements.
  • Pay the license fee and head to the altar.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • Completed joint application form, for a sample form (in Russian)
  • Passports with registered visas, if applicable (the data page may need to be translated into Russian and certified by a Notary public)
  • If one party was married previously, proof of termination of the previous marriage is required, or a death certificate of the previous spouse
  • Proof of residence for foreign nationals
  • Receipt of payment of relevant fees (payable to any branch of the Sberbank, the Savings Bank of Russia)
  • A document confirming that there are no impediments to marriage called a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from the local registry office in the country of origin or through an embassy or consulate in Russia. For more information on how to apply for a CNI, refer to the website of the embassy or consulate from the country of origin in Russia.

The CNI must be presented in both Russian and the original language it was issued in, with the translated document certified by the consulate in the country of origin then certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Russia. The Russian registry office (ZAGS) only accepts the certificate for a period of up to 90 days from the date of issue.

InstructionsEdit

  • Contact the ZAGS (Zapis Aktov Grazhdanskogo Sostoyaniya) office where your fiancee is registered and submit your documents for inspection. ZAGS officials generally will demand that you submit apostilled copies of all civil documents (i.e., divorce certificates, annulments) for their inspection.
  • ZAGS will then schedule the civil service wedding 32 days from the date of registration. You do not have to stay in Russia for this period, but rather be present to submit the application and appear on the 32nd day in order to get your marriage license.



Required InformationEdit

A typical Russian marriage certificate contains;

  • Both spouses (husband of wife) first, middle, and last name, maiden name of woman,
  • Both spouses fathers and mothers name,
  • Name of issuing agency and place of registration,
  • Name and title of signing officer



Need for the DocumentEdit

ZAG is an organization that registers all marriages, births, and deaths in Russia. Propiska is registration.
Marriage in Russia federation is governed by the Family Code of the Russian Federation, the form and the procedure for entering into a marriage on the territory of the Russian Federation shall be defined by the legislation.
While many couples in Russia prefer to have a marriage in a church however, church marriages are not officially accepted. For this reasons, churches require a civil marriage certificate registered by ZAGS before marriage in church.

Persons who intend to marry in Russia must complete the attached standard affidavit form (svidetel'stvo) in which they state their current marital status. The attached form must be completed in Russian and notarized before a Consul of the country. The transliteration of the name should be identical to that on the Russian visa.
