Qatar - Register a Marriage

The only non-Muslim marriages granted official recognition by the State of Qatar are Christian marriages performed by churches registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by clergy recognized by the Ministry to preform non-Muslim marriages.
For you to register your marriage;
- Get the certificate of capacity to marry,
- Undergo a medical screening examination so as to determine their genetic compatibility. This is a measure introduced by the Supreme Council of Health to combat genetic risks following the marriage.
- Contact either one of the following registered churches to conduct your marriage, Contact the Anglican, Catholic, Coptic, or Orthodox churches of Qatar and arrange a marriage ceremony. Following the ceremony, the church will issue a marriage certificate.
- Translate a copy of the marriage Certificate into Arabic through a translator recognized by the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI). You can find one if you search the Business Library of the QCCI website.
- Register the marriage certificate and Arabic translation at the Office of Land Registration and Legalization at the Ministry of Justice’s office in the West Bay. The Ministry will stamp the back of the marriage certificate with a registration number and keep the copy and Arabic translation for its records. The office is located across from the City Centre Mall next to the Kahramma building.
- Thereafter, take your registered certificate to the ministry of foreign affairs for certification
- Once you have completed these formalities, you can register your marriage from your embassy or consulate in Qatar. However, it is not a mandatory procedure for all nationalities.

- All Non-Muslim marriages the have been conducted by recognised churches in Qatar and a marriage certificate has been issued are eligible for registration.

- Marriage Contract 20 Riyal
ValidityEdit
- Registration of a marriage does not have a validity period since it is an entry in the register that the marriage has happened which is used for future reference.

- Once the wedding has been celebrated at the Church, you will receive a marriage certificate which has to be transcribed in Arabic. You will then have to register it with the Qatari Ministry of Justice. Thereafter, this document will be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Note that the Church can also handle these procedures on your behalf for you against payment, or else provide you with free advice.
- Once you have completed these formalities, you can register your marriage from your embassy or consulate in Qatar. However, it is not a mandatory procedure for all nationalities.

- Date of the marriage registration,
- Name of the person who solemnized the marriage and his or her signature,

- A registered marriage certificate is the only prove of marriage that is recognised by governments.

Muslim Marriages
- Muslim Marriages are performed at the Sharia Court, which is located on Al Rayyan Road near Mannai Ra in the Musheirib area. You must provide two witnesses for the marriage. Please note that the Sharia Court will only marry two Muslims. Even though marriages between Muslim men and Christian women are performed by Sharia courts in other Muslim countries, they are not performed in Qatar.

- There is no legal provision regarding the time allowed for the registration of marriages.
- A foreign marriage certificate proves that a marriage has been entered into abroad.
- A proper marriage shall be the marriage that meets its preconditions and conditions without any legal disabilities and shall give rise to its full legal effects on conclusion.
- A marriage contract that contains a condition contradicting its essence shall be void. If it contains a condition that contradicts its necessary legal implication or which Islamic Sharia forbids, such condition shall be void but the contract valid. If it contains a condition that contradicts neither the essence nor the necessary implication of a marriage contract nor which Islamic Sharia forbids, such condition shall be valid and enforceable, and such non-satisfaction shall give the party imposing it the right to claim rescission. Conditions may be proved by Evidence.
