Portugal - Renew Citizen Card (Cart'o de Cidad'o)

You are a national citizen, resident in Portugal or abroad. Or you are a Brazilian citizens under the Porto Seguro Treaty and have valid residence permit in Portugal.
If, you hold a Citizen Card, it will expire every 5 years, if you are less than 25 years old, and every 10 years if you are over 25 years old or expire vary on validity of the residence card if you are a Brazilian under the Port Seguro Treaty.
In these cases, you must apply to renew your Citizen card up to 6 months before expiration. You can also apply to renew the Citizen card in case of loss/ destruction/ theft/robbery or poor state of repair or operation, loss of PIN card or outdating identification elements.
To renew the Citizen Card, you can apply in-person or by Online. Please follow below guiding to do it:

In-person

Prepare the required documents:
- Your current Citizen Card
- The valid residence permit for citizens under the Porto Seguro Treaty
- If you are under 12 years old and your Citizen Card is lost or stolen, you must accompany with your parent or legal guardian and present their legal identification document with your current Citizen Card.
- If you cannot present your Citizen card because of loss/theft, you can apply to renew your Citizen Card when you satisfy one of these conditions:
  - Present a supplementary document as your residence certificate, driver’s license, passport or consulate registration document
  - Present of two original identification documents of relatives
  - Accompaniment of a legal relative
  - Accompaniment of two witnesses with their legal identification documents
  - Or use the complementary test that measured by comparing the biometric data
Scheduling (optional):
- To schedule the date of your service you must call or send an email, indicating your full name, desired date, time, what store of the Citizen or Conservatory intended and your phone number.
- Confirmation of the requested appointment via telephone will be made immediately and confirmation of the requested scheduling by email will be provided as soon as possible, in order of incoming emails.

Visit a suitable office that provide the renewal Citizen Card service-
- If you are under 12 years old, you must be accompanied with your family (parent, legal guardian). Other cases will depend on whether you have your identity card.
- You can apply for renewal Citizen Card follow the above scheduling (if have) or at the offices:
  - The Registry and Notary Institute (IRN) offices: link
  - The shops and Citizen Spaces that provide the service: link
  - The Agency for the Modernization and Quality of Citizen Services (RIAC) offices: link
  - Portuguese Consular Posts: link
- Present the required documents and follow all of officer’s guiding to apply for renewing your Citizen Card. The Citizen Card is delivered face-to-face, at a service desk of your choice.

By Online

Under the online renewal process, the following elements of Citizen Card identification may be changed: your surname, address and / or your contacts. You can only use the online renewal if you are over 25 years old and just for cases:

Renewal due to loss/ destruction/ theft or robbery. The validity of the Citizen Card issued is same as the original. It applies for citizens from 25 to 60 years old that satisfy the conditions:
- Authentication via Digital Mobile Key: link
- Have digital Mobile Key authentication PIN
- The fingerprints validated on the previous Citizen Card
- Your Citizen Card to be renewed has a validity period of more than 60 days
- Your Citizen Card is cancelled or cancellation
Renewal due to loss/ destruction/ theft/ robbery or expiration of validity period. The validity of the Citizen Card issued is 10 years. It applies for citizens from 60 years old and over that satisfy one of two conditions:
- Authentication with Citizen Card:
  - Valid Citizen Card
  - Citizen Card authentication PIN
  - Compatible card reader
  - Software for use the card
  - Fingerprints validated on the previous Citizen Card
- Authentication with Digital Mobile Key: link:
  - Digital Mobile Key and Digital Mobile Key authentication PIN
  - Fingerprints validated on the previous Citizen Card
  - The Citizen Card must meet within the validity period

Follow it prompts to renew the Citizen Card and pay the applicable fee.

Then, the Citizen Card is delivered face-to-face, at a service desk of your choice.
