Portugal - Obtain certificate of registration

Nationals of an EEA Member State who live in Portugal as family members must ask the Town Council (Municipality) where they live for a registration certificate.
The issuing of a certificate of registration requires a valid identity card or passport and a sworn declaration that the applicant:
- is working under a contract of employment or is self-employed in Portugal
- has sufficient resources for himself and for his family
- is registered in a public or private education establishment and has sufficient resources to maintain himself/herself and his/her family
Required DocumentsEdit
- A valid Identity Card / Passport;
- A written Affidavit declaring that you have a Professional activity as a worker or as self-employed in Portugal; or An Affidavit, declaring that you have sufficient funds for you and for your family, and that you are covered by health insurance when the same applies to Portuguese citizens in your country of origin.
If you are a student:
An Affidavit declaring that you are enrolled in an officially recognized school either public or private, and documental evidence by means of an Affidavit or by other means of proof of your choice - that you hold sufficient funds to support yourself and your family, that you are covered by health insurance when the same applies to Portuguese citizens in your country of origin.

Once the first three months of you entering the country are over, you have a period of 30 days during which you must apply for the Registration Certificate. For entitlement to local services - ie schools, healthcare, and social security - people living in Portugal should register with the Portuguese authorities.

Need for the DocumentEdit
The Registration Certificate is the document that formalizes the right of residence in Portugal and must be applied for by any EU/EEA/Switzerland citizen that remains in Portugal for a period exceeding three months.
Nationals of EEA Member States who intend to live in Portugal for over three months must register within 30 days of the end of their first three months in the country at the Town Council (Municipality) in which they live.
When they register they are issued with a registration certificate which is valid for five years or for the period of residence, if less than five years.
Family members of nationals of an EEA Member State who are nationals of a third country must apply for a residence card from the Direco (Central Office) or Delegao Regional [Regional Office] of the Servio de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras [Immigration Service] in the area where they live within 30 days of the end of their first three months in Portugal.
Before the residence card can be issued, a valid passport, a document confirming the family relationship and the registration certificate of the national of the EEA Member State who they are accompanying or going to join must be presented.
