  • Parents, relatives or legal representatitives of children born in facilities not able to register births must visit the civil registry office within 20days
  • They should possess their legal identification documents
  • They should state the name of the child and the date of birth and names and id no of the parent(s) and where the baby was born

  • The birth certificate issued by the hospital or maternity where the birth took place

InstructionsEdit

Birth occurred in Portuguese territory must be reported verbally within 20 days in the civil registry or, if the birth occurs in the health unit where it is possible to register directly.
The following people are authorized to register the birth:

  • The parents
  • Parents' legal representative (legally empowered)
  • A close relative
  • The director (or any appointed administrative staff member) of the place of birth



Required InformationEdit

  • Name of the child
  • Date of birth
  • Names of the parents
  • City and province of birth
  • The date, name and signature of the certifying Registrar, Acting Registrar or Secretary, and the office seal.



Need for the DocumentEdit

Any child born on Portuguese territory has to be registered within 20 days of birth at theCivil Registry Office(Conservatria do Registo Civil); this also applies when the parents are not Portuguese.
A new government programme,Nascer Cidado(Born Citizen), has been put in place allowing parents to register the newborn directly at the hospital or maternity clinic (although this is not possible everywhere).

The civil registration in most towns begins in 1911, though there are some town registrars that have records dating back to the early 1800s. For example there are some civil registrations for Madeira According to the Family History Library Catalog there are civil registrations of births from 1834 to 1911 for non-Catholics in the district of Funchal. civil registration in Portugal is far from complete. Even with the recording of contemporary records, it is estimated that only about 85% of current births are actually recorded. Earlier records are even less complete.
