Apply Online

  1. To apply for EI benefits for self-employed people, the applicant will need to log in to their My Service Canada account. Use the following Link
  2. If the applicant does not have an account, follow these steps:
    • To create an account, click on the following Link.
    • Scroll to the bottom and under the “New User” option, click on the option the applicant would like to register using.
    • Click on “Start now”.
    • The applicant will need to enter all the relevant details such as username, password, bank details and so on and the account will be created.
  3. Once logged in, the applicant must click on the “Apply for” icon.
  4. Click on “Register for EI for the self-employed”.
  5. The applicant may have to answer a few questions and follow the steps to enter into an agreement with Employment Insurance Commission and click on “Submit” to submit the application.
  6. Once the applicant submits their application, they will have registered for the EI benefits program.
  7. The applicant will need to send supporting documents, every year when the applicant completes their tax returns, they must complete and submit schedule 13, use the following Link
  8. The applicant will need to pay premiums.
  9. If the applicant needs a particular benefit, they will need to apply for that benefit specifically.

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • The applicant must be registered in a self-employment program for 12 months.
  • The applicant has decreased the amount of time they spend at work by more than 40%.
  • The applicant has earned a minimum amount of self-employed earnings between January 1st and December 31st of the year before the applicant applies for benefits.
  • To be eligible for the benefits under this scheme, the applicant must meet to eligibility criteria for the benefits they are applying for.

FeesEdit

  • Every year, the applicant will need to pay premiums for every 100$ the applicant earns.
  • The premium rate changes every year.



ValidityEdit

  • The applicant can withdraw from the program anytime.
  • The applicant cannot withdraw if they have received special benefits as a self-employed person and will have to continue paying premiums as long as they are self-employed.

Processing TimeEdit

  • The applicant will be eligible for benefits 12 months after registering with the program.
  • The applicant shall start receiving individual benefits (Maternal, sickness, caregiver etc) within 28 days from the submission of the application.
  • There is a one week waiting period before the applicant starts receiving money, this is the deductible for the employment insurance.
