Nova Scotia - Guidance To Apply Student Loan

Apply In-Person:

  1. The applicant can visit the student loan office in their school/college.
  2. The applicant will be given an application form, the link to the application form can be found under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  3. Fill in the application form with all relevant details.
  4. Submit the application form at one of the addresses given in the application form.
  5. It takes about 5-6 weeks to process the application.


Apply Online
For Full-time students

  1. To apply for a student loan online, the applicant will need to log in to their Nova Scotia account, use the following Link.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find a list of loans and grants.
  3. The applicant will need to create a MyPATH account, log in to the account.
  4. If that applicant does not have an account, follow these steps:
    • On the login page, click on “Sign in”: Link
    • Enter personal information such as SIN, Birthday, password and username, and click on “Submit”.
    • The applicant will be sent a confirmation email, click on the link, the account has been created.
  5. Once logged in to the account, the applicant will need to click on the “Apply for a loan” option.
  6. The applicant will be directed to the student loan welcome page.
  7. Click on the application for the student loan option depending on the year the applicant is starting their year of study.
  8. Read through the terms and conditions and click on “Apply”.
  9. The applicant will see a digital application fill this with all relevant details such as personal information, studies information and financial information.
  10. Once all the details have been entered click on the “Proceed to submit” option and submit the application.
  11. Enter the loan amount required and click on submit.
  12. The applicant will be directed to a declaration page, read through this carefully.
  13. Click on submit an application, and return to the welcome page.
  14. At the bottom of the welcome page, the applicant can track the status of their application.
  15. The applicant shall receive information about whether the loan has been granted within 45 days from the submission of the application.
  16. The applicant shall receive the money once the applicant’s school confirms that the applicant is enrolled in a course.

If the applicant faxes or emails their document they do not need to mail original copies of their documents.

  • Social Insurance Number
  • Information about school and/or program of study
  • A bank account in the applicant’s name
  • Total income amount from last year
  • Any identification documents such as:
  • Passport
  • SIN
  • Driver’s license

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent residency.
  • The applicant must have a valid SIN.
  • The applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia.
  • The applicant must show financial need.
  • The applicant must show academic progress and achieve satisfactory scholastic standing in each period of post-secondary study.
  • The applicant must not be in jail or have a warrant out for their arrest.
  • Any loan the applicant has must show good standing.



FeesEdit

The applicant does not need to pay fees to apply for a student loan.


ValidityEdit

  • The student loan is valid for a period of 12 months after which the applicant will need to apply for a loan again if they continue studying.

Processing TimeEdit

  • It takes about 2 to 6 weeks to process the application.
  • The applicant shall receive their funds within 10 business days from the day their course starts.

InstructionsEdit

  • It is recommended that the applicant apply as early as possible for a student loan.
  • The applicant will need to apply for a student loan yearly depending on how long the duration of their course is.
  • For part-time students, they must apply at least 4-6 weeks before their course starts.
  • The applicant will need to take note of the 10-digit Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA) number has been created for you inside MyPATH. Follow the National Student Loan.
  • Application for loan open during May.

  • Line 15000 of previous years income tax return
  • Any other financial resources or income information (RESP, investments, scholarships, etc.)
  • Complete mailing address and permanent address (if different from mailing address)
  • Current and/or cell phone numbers
  • Program Information
  • Name of Program
  • Institution Name (and campus, if applicable)
  • Start and End Dates for the current academic year
  • Costs (tuition and required fees)
  • If the applicant is a Dependent Student, you will also require your:
  • Parent(s) or guardian(s) information (i.e., SIN, date of birth, postal code, line 15000 of previous year’s Income Tax Return)
  • Sibling(s) name and age (and SIN for any sibling attending post-secondary)
  • If the applicant is a Married/Common-Law Student, you will also require your:
  • Spouse’s information (i.e., SIN, line 15000 of previous year’s Income Tax Return, date of birth and income)
