Nova Scotia - Apply for Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a social insurance number, the applicant has to visit the nearest Service Canada centre.
  2. The applicant can find the nearest centre here Service Canada
  3. To request an appointment go to this link Appointment
  4. Use the following link to download the application form Link
  5. Carry original copies of relevant documents that have been mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form.
  7. Submit the application form along with the documents to the authorities.
  8. The applicant does not need to pay fees for SIN.
  9. The applicant will get their SIN as well as their original documents on the same day.


Apply Online

  1. To apply online, the applicant will have to visit the official Government of Canada webpage.
  2. Use the following link for the online. Use the following link for the online application form.
  3. Enter application type, in this case, it will be Social insurance number.
  4. Enter details such as name, family name, DOB, Telephone number, country and address.
  5. Click on “I have read the privacy statement”.
  6. Click on “Next”.
  7. The applicant will be directed to another page.
  8. The applicant will have to upload clear, digital copies of the documents.
  9. Click on “I certify that the information……. complete”.
  10. Click on submit.
  11. The application will be sent to the concerned authorities for review.
  12. Once accepted, the applicant will receive their SIN.


Apply by Mail

  1. To apply by mail, the applicant will have to fill an application form.
  2. Use the following link to download the application for Link
  3. Fill in all necessary details.
  4. Attach all documents, keep in mind that you can only attach original copies of the documents (These will be returned).
  5. Mail the documents to this address: Service Canada Social Insurance Registration Office PO Box 7000 Bathurst NB E2A 4T1 Canada.

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant should be a Canadian Citizen, a permanent resident or a temporary resident.
  • The applicant should be 12 years of age or older.
  • A parent or legal guardian can act on behalf of the applicant




FeesEdit

The applicant does not need to pay a fee to apply for a social insurance number.


ValidityEdit

These apply for SIN that begins with a “9”.

  • For an applicant outside Canada, the SIN is valid for 5 years.


A Social Insurance Number that is assigned to a person who was in Canada when they applied to be registered has a period of validity that expires on the earlier of the following days:

  • The day on which the period authorized for their stay in Canada ends.
  • The day that is two years after the day on which the number is assigned.
