Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for Farm Development Leases (FDL) in person, the applicant has to visit the office of Department of Natural Resources and Renewables nearest to their location.
2. Address and Contact details of the offices can be found in the following Contact link
3. The applicant has to visit the office as applicable and obtain an Application for Farm Development Leases (FDL) from the respective department.
4. While visiting the office, the applicants should carry the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. The applicant has to complete the application with required details in respective fields under each section and submit it to the relevant official with the required documents.
6. The applicant has to pay the non-refundable Assignment fees of $3150 (no GST) for the approval of lease, as cheque, money order or any other available payment modes.
7. Then, the submitted application and attached documents will be assessed and verified.
8. Upon completion of the assessment and verification, the applicant will be intimated through phone or email to collect the approved Farm Development Lease.

Eligibility

• Any farmer in Nova Scotia, who wishes to use public land for agricultural development, including cultivation, haying and grazing, can apply.
• The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant 19 years of age or older.
• The applicant must be engaged in the operation of the farm or ranch.

Fees

• The applicant has to pay the non-refundable Assignment fees of $3150 (no GST) for the approval of lease, as cheque, money order or any other available payment modes.

Validity

• Farm Development Leases are issued for a maximum of 10 years.
