Procedure

Rename electronic

Name changes can be made electronically by the Tax Administration.

Paper form

If you want to use paper form, must be notified for each person who will rename. Notification shall be sent to the tax office in the municipality where the person message applies resident. There are a guide in the message form. For more information about changing the name - see links at bottom of this page.

If you are a Norwegian citizen living abroad, and wish to change your name, you need to complete a name change form (Melding om endring av navn) and send it to the Norwegian Tax Administration, who is responsible for the National Registry. Name change notifications must be sent by post by applicants to the following address:

Eligibility

You can change the first name, middle name and last name. Note that middle is not a first name. Name that can be taken as a surname may also be taken as a middle name.

You can change your own name and the name of children you have parental responsibility for, if they are under 18 years.

Processing Time

It takes about three weeks to process an application for a change of name. When we have approved your application, a letter confirming the change of name will be sent to your registered address. If your application is rejected, you will be notified of this electronically if you have chosen to communicate with the Tax Administration exclusively electronically. If you have not chosen this, the letter will be sent to your registered address.

Instructions

If you wish to change your name, you must notify your local tax office so your new name may be registered correctly in the Norwegian National Registry (Folkeregisteret). Likewise, if your name has ever been changed it is your responsibility to make sure that the name change has been registered in the National Registry.

If you are under 18 years of age, the person or people who have parental responsibility for you must consent to the change of name. If the name change concerns a child over 12 years of age, the child must also give his or her consent.

Fill in the form entitled Melding om endring av navn" (Notification of change of name) and send it to your local tax office.

• The full name you are applying to change to (if you are changing your name).
• Date and place of birth
• Marital status and details
• Places of residence for last three months
• Address for Correspondence

You can change your own name, as well as the names of children for which you have parental responsibility if they are less than 18 years of age.

The appeal body is the county governor in the county in which you are resident. However, you must still send the appeal via the tax office.

If you are over 18, you will generally not be permitted to take, change or delete a first name or surname more than once every ten years. There are, however, exceptions. If you have taken, changed or deleted a name, you can still do the following within the next ten years:

• Take the surname of a spouse or cohabiting partner who you have lived with for at least two years, or who you have children with
• Take a surname which you have had previously
• Take the surname of a step-parent, foster parent or adoptive parent
• Change your first name back to the first name you had before you changed it
• Take, change or omit a first name or surname if special reasons apply.
