Apply In-Person:
- To apply for a driver’s license in Canada the applicant will need to first get a Class 7 Learner’s license.
- Visit the nearest driving test centre to take the test.
- The applicant can find the nearest DMV
- Carry all relevant documents such as ID proof, but to know what documents you need, contact the nearest DMV.
- The applicant will have to pay a fee, the fee is 59$ for normal citizens and 16$ for senior citizens.
- The agent will check to see if you have good vision.
- Once the applicant passes these tests, a class 7 license will be issued.
- The applicant will receive a temporary license which they can use until the license card arrives by mail.
- Once the applicant receives the license card, they will have to destroy the temporary license.
- The license is valid for a period of 12 months after which the applicant can move on to the next stage of the test or renew the learner’s license.
- After 12 months, the applicant is eligible for a class 5 GDL license on a probationary basis, follow these steps to apply:
- Schedule a test with the nearest DMV.
- The applicant can find the nearest DMV
- The agent will inform you of the documents that are needed.
- The applicant will have to pass a vision test.
- Make sure your vehicle meets all safety standards, the agent will check at the testing site before letting you drive.
- The applicant will have to pay a fee.
- The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
- Once the applicant is finished with the test, they will be informed whether they failed or passed the test.
- The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.
- Destroy the temporary card once the license card arrives through mail.
- After a period of one year and without any suspensions, the applicant can apply for a Class 5 Graduated driver’s license, to apply, follow these steps:
- Schedule a test with the nearest DMV.
- The agent will inform you of the documents that are needed.
- The applicant will have to pass a vision test.
- The applicant will have to give a driver’s test.
- Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
- The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.

Stage one/Learners class 7:
- Applicant must be a resident of NWT.
- Applicant’s age must be 15 years or above.
- Applicant must pass the written test.
- The duration of this stage1 or Learner class7 will be of 12 months.
For a class 5 GDL, the applicant has to be 17 years of age or older.

- Class 7- is valid for 12 months.
- Class 5 GDL (Probationary) is valid for 12 months
- Full GDL is valid for up to 5 years.
