Nigeria - Obtain police clearance certificate

Procedure[edit]

You can get your police clearance certificate using any of these three major methods:

Applying in person at the force CID, Police Criminal Registry, Alagbon, Lagos State (getting it from Nigeria)
  • Visit the criminal registry office in Alagbon, Lagos, or other state command headquarters; tell the officer in charge you want to get “Police Character Clearance certificate” you will be directed to the appropriate office.
  • Pay the charge fee, and collect the application form. You can fill with either black or blue pen, and attach your passport photograph. (Ask for help, if you do not know how to fill the application form)
  • Submit the application for forensic analysis. It could take some hours before your certificate is ready, depending on the number of applicants on ground. Also, it could take some minutes for the forensic officer to analyze and run full check on your fingerprints and details you submitted.
  • Collect your certificate. If you applied at the criminal registry in Lagos, you can get it within a day, but it could take some days, if you applied at the state command office or from outside Nigeria (we will tell you why in later part of this guide).


Applying from your state through Nigeria Police Force website
  • Log on to http://www.npf.gov.ng/
  • Click police character clearance link on the quick-link menu.
  • You will be directed to http://npf.gov.ng/character/
  • Fill the registration form on the right to obtain an Application ID.
  • Complete the Application Process by Login in with your email and the Application ID electronically generated.
  • Fill the Bio-Data form when logged-in, then enter your details with the instructions outlined on the page.
  • Upload Bio-data page of your international passport/identity card
  • Print out the information submitted then take the print out to the forensic section in the State Police Command for fingerprint analysis and for further directives.
    • If you are in Osun State, visit NPF State Command Headquarters, along Abere (Ife-Ibadan road),Osogbo.
    • If in Ondo State, visit NPF State Command Headquarters, Alagbaka, and Akure.
    • If in the State of Abuja, Visit Zone 7 Police Command Headquarters, Wuse, Abuja, Nigeria
  • Upon completion of this procedure, your application shall be processed through the criminal data base of the force and decisions including issuance of the certificate, if application is successful shall be conveyed within five working days.
  • Your application will be fully processed after these steps


Applying from outside Nigeria
Through Nigerian embassy (from Canada):
  • You can approach the Nigerian embassy to help with the application.
  • Fill the Police Clearance application form and can apply by mail to the following address

You can also apply by email to ncis@npf.gov.ng addressed to the Commissioner of Police. You must send the following together with the application
  • A pre-paid return courier envelope
  • A copy of your passport
  • A set of fingerprints taken and certified by a recognized police authority or the Nigerian embassy or consulate
  • An international money order payable to the Nigerian Police Force, CID
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • Documentary proof of last residential address in Nigeria.
  • Copy of your Residence Permit/Work Permit/Appointment Letter/Dependent Pass Purpose for Police Character Certificate (Immigration Authority Letter) or Letter stating the reasons for PCC.
Note: Police certificates can be certified at your nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate for a fee.

Apply through a third party service
You can also apply by yourself through gateway Nigeria third party service through the following steps.
  • Visit the official website of Gateway Nigeria at https://www.gateway.ng/ and register for an account
  • Download the application form
  • Complete the form
  • Since you are applying from another country, you will need to scan each of the page separately (and must be in PDF format), and a copy of your passport data page.
  • Click “Apply now” to proceed with the application, and pay the service fee.
  • Send your scanned and completed form.
  • You will be able to track the progress of your application and download a scanned copy of the clearance certificate when issued.
  • You will still need to certify this certificate upon arrival at Nigerian embassy or consulate in your host country.

Eligibility[edit]

It is issued to any adult who has resided for more than 30 days in Nigeria.

Fees[edit]

Bottom line: Cost of police clearance certificate in Nigeria isn’t known, but it ranges between N3,500 to N 10,000.

You may have to negotiate to get the best price

Validity[edit]

The validity period is three months

Processing Time[edit]

If you are applying at the Criminal registry office in Lagos, you can get it within a day, depending on the number of application on ground, and the time you get there.

If you are applying from your state command, you may have to wait between 5 to 7days because it will still be passed to the Criminal registry office in Lagos.

If you are applying from outside Nigeria by yourself or through a third party, it could take between 14 to 21 days for you to get it.

Need for the Document[edit]

The Police Character Certificate certifies that the applicant has never partaken in any criminal activity that led to the involvement of the Nigerian Police Force.

The Police Character Certificate is also required when a person applies for an immigration status to other countries.

Information which might help[edit]

A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is issued by the Nigerian Police Force. In Nigeria, the criminal record information is maintained at the Criminal Investigation Department, Nigerian Police Force.

The PCC Certifying that the applicant has never partaken in any criminal activity that led to the involvement of the (Nigerian Police Force) and is also required when a person applies for an immigration status to other countries.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate[edit]

  • This clearance is needed by those who want to change country of residence.
  • You may be mandated to get police clearance certificate if you want to occupy a sensitive position in Nigeria, though simply called police attestation.
  • You may also need to upload a Police character certificate, if you are to proceed on a post graduate programme in foreign institutions.
  • Even as a tourist to another country, you will need police character certificate. to show that you don’t have outstanding criminal record back home, and ensure that you won’t be a threat to your host country.
