Procedure

Apply Online

1. To apply for an ECOWAS Travel Certificate online, the applicant has to visit the Nigeria Immigration Service Portal by clicking the following link: apply online
2. Open the application form page and start filling it by entering your personal information in the relevant fields provided which is the first section.
3. After that, you will have to provide your address details in the further residential address section after which you have to provide the business address in the next section.
4. Similarly, complete all the sections in the application form like physical details, details and address of next of kin and other travel documents’ details by providing details in appropriate fields.
5. Then, select the state and office of NIS in Nigeria in which you want your travel document to be processed.
6. At last, go through the application for any mistyped information, enter the displayed code, check the declaration box and click “Submit Application” button.
7. Your application ID and reference number will be displayed, note it down and click “Close” button.
8. In the next page, scroll down to the bottom and click “Print Acknowledge Slip” button and print the slip by clicking the “Print” button in the next page if you wish to proceed with cash payment at bank.
9. If not, click “Proceed to online payments” button and select applicable payment currencies in the next page and click “Continue” button.
10. Follow the on-screen instructions and complete the payment process as required with the help of your banking particulars.
11. After payment, your application lodgement will be over and you will be provided with payment reference number.
12. Then, you have to take all the documents required to be submitted for the type of Passport that you have completed online application and visit the Passport office that you chose during the online application.
13. Visit the office and submit the required documents to the relevant authority in the office. After submission, the submitted applications and attached documents will put forth for verification and validation.
14. After checking and finding that the requirements have been furnished properly, the officials will proceed to perform further required actions.
15. Once all the necessary processes are over and Passport document is ready for collection, you will be notified and asked to collect the document.

Eligibility

• Any citizen of a country which is a signatory of the ECOWAS Treaty is eligible for the Travel Certificate.
• Any ECOWAS national, who wants to travel within the ECOWAS Sub-region, can apply.
• The applicant must possess a confirmation of Nigerian Citizenship obtained from applicant’s Local Government Chairman.

Instructions

• Enter all the names (first and surname) as listed in your official identity document. If only one name is listed in your official identity document enter that surname.
• Please avoid placing suffixes with your surname.
• Please note that you can pay for your applications using any visa/master card.
• Students and Trainee applicants applying for the certificate shall obtain letters of introduction from the heads of their institutions accepting Immigration Responsibility (IR).

Need for the Document

• If a community citizen in Nigeria wishes to travel to a country that is a signatory of the ECOWAS Treaty or within the ECOWAS countries, he/she must possess an ECOWAS Travel Certificate obtained from the Nigeria Immigration Service.

• The certificate is issued at the Service Headquarters, 36 State Commands, FCT office as well as all Immigration offices in the 774 local governments of the Federation.
• It is a recognized travel document valid for journeys within the Sixteen Countries of ECOWAS.
• It proves that the holder is a community citizen and can be held concurrently with the National Passport.
• It is renewable for every two years and can also be replaced or amended, if required.
