  1. To Apply for an Abattoir (Slaughter House) License, the applicant has to approach the Service Canada Regional link – link

  1. Ensure that the abattoir business is properly registered with the appropriate government agency.
  2. The applicant may need to register your business as a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or other legal entity.
  3. Choose a suitable location for the abattoir and ensure that the facility meets all the necessary construction and hygiene standards.
  4. The facility should comply with federal and provincial regulations related to food safety, animal welfare, and environmental standards. You may need to work with architects, engineers, and inspectors to ensure compliance.
  5. Develop a comprehensive food safety plan that outlines the procedures and protocols for safe slaughter, processing, and packaging of meat products. The plan should address issues like sanitation, cross-contamination prevention, and employee training. It should adhere to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) or provincial food safety guidelines.
  6. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
  7. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  8. The application will typically require detailed information about your business, facility, food safety plan, and animal welfare practices.
  9. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  10. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  11. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
  12. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  13. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  14. All applications are processed within a reasonable time, having regard to the particular circumstances of each application, including the completeness of information and documents submitted to the authority by the applicant.
  15. The authority may seek additional information from an applicant if this is necessary to assess the application. The authority does not need to deal further with an application until the applicant has provided this additional information.
  16. Expect thorough inspections of your facility by government officials to ensure compliance with food safety and animal welfare regulations. Be prepared to make necessary improvements based on inspection findings.
  17. Once the process is completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
  18. Once the facility meets all the regulatory requirements and passes inspections, the application for an abattoir license will be reviewed.
  19. If approved, the applicant will be issued a license to operate your slaughterhouse.
  20. This entire process can be completed within 2 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
