- To Apply for a Certified Public Accountant License, the applicant has to approach the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Canada link
- If the applicant holds a U.S. CPA designation, the applicant may need to undergo an educational equivalency assessment to determine if his/her educational background meets the requirements set by the Canadian CPA body.
- The assessment typically involves comparing the applicant’s education and courses to the Canadian CPA education requirements.
- If the applicant does not hold the U.S. CPA designation but are interested in obtaining it, he/she will need to pass the Uniform CPA Exam administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). This exam is a requirement to obtain the U.S. CPA designation.
- An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
- The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
- Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant has to attach photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting it.
- Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
- The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
- After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
- Then the application will be processed further.
- The provincial CPA body may conduct a character and suitability assessment to ensure that the applicant meets the ethical and professional standards of the accounting profession. This may involve providing references or undergoing background checks.
- Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
- Depending on the provincial CPA body, the applicant may need to fulfill additional requirements such as completing a professional ethics course or meeting specific work experience criteria.
- This entire process can be completed within 30 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
