Apply by Mail

  1. To apply for an International River Improvements Licence, the applicant will need to mail an application addressed to the Minister Of Environment. Here is the contact link to obtain all the contact details of the minister Link
  2. The application will need to contain all the information mentioned under the “Required Information” section of this page.
  3. The applicant will also need to provide additional information as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. Fee-related details will be intimated by the authorities.
  5. Mail the application form to the address mentioned by the authorities.
  6. The application will be forwarded to the Minister of Environment for review, the applicant may be contacted for further information if required.
  7. It may take a few months to process the application, the applicant will be notified where they can collect the license from.

  • The applicant must have all the required permits from their province before applying for an international river improvements license.
  • The applicant is excepted from the river improvements act if the improvement is of a temporary nature, to be operated for a period not exceeding two years.

  • Each license will come with certain terms and conditions that the applicant must accept, if they do not meet these conditions, the license will be revoked.

  • The name
  • Address and occupation of the applicant
  • The name and a clear description of the international river on which an international river improvement is to be made
  • The place where the said improvement is to be made and a description of the improvement
  • Details as to the effect of the improvement on the level or flow of water at the Canadian boundary
  • Details as to the effect of the improvement on the use of water outside Canada
  • Details of the adverse effects of the improvement on flood control and other uses of water together with information as to plans to minimize such effects
  • A brief economic analysis of the direct and indirect benefits and costs of and resulting from the improvement
  • Any further details concerning the improvement tending to indicate that it is compatible with a sound development of the resources and economy of Canada.



Need for the DocumentEdit

  • An international reiver improvements license allows an applicant to construct dams, obstructions, canal reservoirs or any other work that increases or decreases the natural flow of water.
