ProcedureEdit

  1. To renew your licence, you must apply at a driver licensing agent.
  2. Present or submit the following documents:
    1. Completed application form
    2. Evidence of your identity
    3. Proof that your eyesight meets the required standard
    4. Medical certificate (if required)
  3. Have your photo and signature taken by the licensing agent.
  4. Pay the renewal application fee.
  5. You will be issued a temporary licence which is valid for 21 days. Bring it with you whenever you're driving until your new driver licence arrives in the mail - within two to three weeks.

If you have plans to travel abroad: If your licence is likely to expire while you're overseas, it's worth renewing your licence before you leave. You can only renew your licence when you're in New Zealand.

For licences that expired more than 5 years ago: You may have to pass theory and practical tests to renew your licence. However, if you can produce evidence of having been licensed to drive during the previous five years (for example with an overseas driver licence) tests may not be required.
