New Zealand - Obtain an IRD Number for a Business Charity or Trust

ProcedureEdit

  1. Complete an application for a non-individual IRD number (Form IR596). A link to download the form is provided under 'Documents to Use' section. You will need to provide these information: organization type (eg charity, partnership, contact details, start date and details about the office holder (the names, titles and IRD numbers of each director, partner, trustee or executive). Print and sign the completed form.
  2. Include a photocopy of any 1 of the following documents to your application:
    1. certificate of incorporation (for companies or incorporated societies)
    2. deed of trust
    3. certificate of registration.
  3. Send your application to this address:
    Inland Revenue
    PO Box 39010
    Wellington Mail Centre
    Lower Hutt 5045
  4. Within 8-10 working days of receiving your application IRD will send you a plastic card showing the IRD number.

Need for the DocumentEdit

An IRD number is a unique identification number from Inland Revenue. You will need to have your IRD number handy every time you deal with the Department.

If youre a sole trader, you can use your own IRD number whenever you file your business tax. But if you are setting up a company, partnership, or a trust or estate, you will need to apply for a separate IRD number.

Youll also need a separate IRD number if youre starting a:

  • charity or non-profit organisaton
  • club or society
  • superannuation scheme
