New Zealand - Obtain a Library Card

Depend on the region you are living there may be minor differences in the procedure. Generally the procedures are follows,
- Either your passport or two (2) forms of ID, preferably one with a photo-ID.
- The name and address of a contact person (we may need to find you if you change address and forget to tell us).
- Proof of address (no more than 30 days old). This can be a letter from your bank, school, power or telephone company. If you do not have proof of address you can borrow 2 items. To continue your membership you must provide proof of address within 3 months.

You will then need to bring in two forms of identification into any library to activate your account.
- Photo ID e.g. your passport, driver's license or an 18+ card.
- Proof of address e.g. mail posted to your residential address such as a rates demand, rent/tenancy agreement, bank/credit card statement, or a business account/invoice.
Adult customers without proof of address and under-18 customers without a guardian immediately on hand, may wish to apply for a starter membership which can be created without these requirements, but which only allows a customer to borrow two items at a time.

Under 18 membershipsEdit
If you are under 18, you will also need your parent, guardian, or homestay host or agent with you when you enrol. Your parent/guardian will need to provide identification and proof of address. In signing as guarantor, your parent/guardian is accepting responsibility for any charges incurred on that card.

Conditions of Membership:
- With your temporary card, you may reserve up to 5 books.
- After 4 weeks, temporary membership will expire if you haven't visited a library to become a full member.
- To borrow books and continue your membership, you must come into the library and become a full member.
- Visit any branch and supply with Valid ID and recent proof of address, and an alternative address (not your personal residential address.)
- A Parent or Guardian is required to sign the form and be responsible for all Child or Young Adult cards and the items issued on them.
- Cards are not transferable between people. All items borrowed are the responsibility of the card holder.
- All items are to be returned to the library by their due date.
- The library must be notified of any change of address and any library card lost or stolen. All items issued before such notification are the card holders' responsibility.
- Payment to be made on demand for all item rental charges, overdue charges, damages and replacement charges that are incurred.
- Information will be passed on to a debt collection and credit reporting agency should you default, and an administration charge may be incurred.
