Procedure

1. To apply for the procedure, you can either:
   1. Change the gender recorded on your driver licence record as part of a driver licensing transaction (example: when you are applying for a new class or endorsement or are renewing, replacing or reinstating your licence). Normal driver licensing fee will apply. OR
   2. Apply directly to Transport Agency to have your driver licence record amended.
2. Provide confirmation of the gender you wish to have recorded (Male, Female or Indeterminate). Note: You do not need to provide an amended birth certificate.
3. Applicants under the age of 18 must also submit the following:
   1. a statutory declaration from their parent or guardian which supports the change in gender identity on the Driver Licence Register.
   2. a statutory declaration from a registered counselor / medical profession which supports the change.
4. Present original evidence of identity document which states your gender. If the gender on your evidence of identity document is not the same as the gender you wish to have recorded, you will also need to provide an original statutory declaration (indicating the preferred gender) and how long you have maintained that gender identity.

Required Documents

• Completed Statutory Declaration for Change of Gender - Form DL25. The statutory declaration will need to be witnessed by an authorised witness. An authorised witness is one of the following:
  • Justice of the Peace
  • member of Parliament
  • lawyer
  • registered legal executive (Fellow of NZILE)
  • government officer authorised to take statutory declarations.
• Additional documentary evidence for applicants under the age of 18:
  • a statutory declaration from their parent or guardian which supports the change in gender identity on the Driver Licence Register.
  • a statutory declaration from a registered counselor / medical profession which supports the change.
• Original evidence of identity document which states your gender. If the gender on your evidence of identity document is not the same as the gender you wish to have recorded, you will also need to provide an original statutory declaration (indicating the preferred gender) and how long you have maintained that gender identity.

Fees

As the gender is not displayed on your photo driver licence, you do not need to have a new licence card issued.

If you do not require a replacement licence, the change will be made at no cost.
