- Check your local councils website for information on how local licensing processes work. District licensing committees are run by district and city councils (including the Auckland Council). - Council maps and websites
- Determine the type of licence you require depending on what you want to do. Have a look on your councils website for specific guidance on which licence is right for you.
- When you apply for a licence you need to complete the appropriate form(s), which is available on your councils website.
- Submit the required forms to your local council's office and pay the application fee.
- You will receive an acknowledgement that your application has been received by the council.
- Most applications require the applicants to put notices in local newspapers or a nominated internet site notifying the public of their applications, and put similar notices on the proposed premises.

Four types of licence:
- On-licence (eg, pub, tavern, hotel, restaurant, cafe, bar, entertainment venue, train, plane) allows the sale or supply of alcohol for consumption on the premises.
- Off-licence (eg, bottle store, supermarket) allows the sale or supply of alcohol for consumption off the premises.
- Club licence (eg, sports club, RSA, working men's club) allows the sale or supply of alcohol for consumption on the club premises to members of the club, their guests and members of other clubs with reciprocal visiting rights.
- Special licence (eg, for a food and wine festival, wedding in a council hall etc) allows the sale or supply of alcohol to anyone attending an event, private function, street party, sporting event. Special licences can be either on-site for consumption on the premises, or off-site for consumption elsewhere.
