The A driving licence for motorcycles and tricycles

As of 19 January 2013, the A driving licence for motorcycles and tricycles will subdivided into three categories, namely A1, A2 and A, depending on the power of the engine. Category A1 can be issued to persons aged over 18. Drivers who have held an A1 licence for at least twoyears can obtain a Category A2 licence if they are aged over 20. Category A licences can be issued to drivers aged 22 and older who have held a Category A2 licence for at least two years. Drivers aged 24 or older can take the Category A exam directly.

A1 motorcycles with a maximum cylinder capacity of 125 cm3, a maximum power of 11 kW and a power/weight ratio of less than 0.1 kW per kg, all-electric motorcycles with a maximum power of 11 kW and a power/weight ratio of less than 0.1 kW per kg and motorised tricycles with a maximum power of 15kW.

A2 motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW and a power/weight ratio of less than 0.2 kW per kg and notderived from a vehicle of more than double its power.

A motorcycles and motorised tricycles with a power of over 15 kW.

Driving Licence Category C for lorries (with trailer)

Category C1 is being introduced in addition to Category C. With a C1 driving licence, you can drive a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass of between 3500 kg and 7500 kg. A minimum age of 18 applies for such licences. A minimum age of 21 applies for Category C licences. However, drivers who have passed a test of skills and behaviour may take the Category C exam from the age of 18.

After the introduction of the Third Driving Licence Directive, the period of validity of Category C1 and C licences will be five years. Category C gives automatic entitlement to Category C1. This category is currently listed on Dutch driving licences and from 19 January 2013 you will also be able to take a separate exam for Category C1.

Driving Licence Category D for buses for passenger transport

In addition to Category D, Category D1 is being introduced. Category D1 allows for the transport of a maximum of 16 persons, excluding the driver. A minimum age of 21 applies for such licences. However, drivers who have passeda test of skills and behaviour may take the CategoryD1 exam from the age of 18.

A minimum age of 24 applies for Category D licences. However, drivers who have passeda test of skills and behaviour may take the CategoryD exam from the age of 21. After the introduction of the Third Driving Licence Directive, the period of validity of Category D1 and D licences will be five years.

Validity

All new driving licences are valid for a period of up to 10 years, or 5 years for persons with an age 75 years or older (as of January 1, 2014).

On the basis of medical reasons, driver's license issued to persons between 65 and 70 years have validity shorter than 10 years.
