Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To open a new bank account in Nepal, the applicant has to visit the bank branches of their choice.
2. A list of banks and financial institutions in Nepal can be found in the “Office Locations & Contacts” of this page or through the following List of Bank and Financial Institutions in Nepal Link
3. Upon visiting the bank of their choice the applicant should approach the accounts opening desk and enquire about opening a bank account.
4. The concerned officer will take the applicant through the types of bank accounts available and will advise the applicant on the suitable bank account to open.
5. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
6. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
7. Upon filling the application form, the applicant should attest it with their signature and attach the required documents with the completed form. A list of the required documents can be found in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
8. Submit the completed application form and required documents to the accounts opening officer for processing.
9. The accounts opening officer will then verify the application form and documents for their authenticity.
10. Upon successful verification the accounts opening officer will enter the applicants details into the banks system and open and account for the applicant.
11. The applicant will then be provided with their new account details and relevant documents related to their account.
12. Depending on the type of account, the applicant may be asked to make an initial deposit or maintain a minimum balance in the bank account ,at that particular point on time. However, this may vary concerning the bank of choice.
13. Minimum Account opening amount is between Rs. 500 - Rs. 1000 (note, this amount varies from bank to bank and the type of account been open)
14. The whole process usually takes a period of one day.

Required Documents

For Nepalese Citizen:

1. Citizenship/Passport / Driving License/Voters ID Card
2. Birth certificate or minor identification letter in case of minor & citizenship certificate/passport/voters card/driving license of guardian.
3. In case of citizenship certificate not obtained by Nepalese individual, recommendation letter from local body.
4. PAN (in case of availability/requirement)
5. Recent passport size photo
6. Addressing Certifying Documents like utility bill
7. Any other documents if feel necessary and required by the bank.

For Refugee Account

1. Copy of Identification documents issued by Government of Nepal or other concerned offices.
2. Recent pp size photo

For Foreign Citizen:

1. Copy of the valid visa.
2. Copy of Passport
3. Recommendation letter of the organization (if employee in any organization)
4. In case of Indian citizen-who do not bear passport, certificate stating that the individual is Indian Citizen.
5. Recent passport size photo
6. Any other documents if feel necessary and required by the bank.

• All citizens and non-citizens above the age of 18 and above are eligible to apply.
  

Fees

• Minimum Account opening amount is between Rs. 500 - Rs. 1000 (note, this amount varies from bank to bank and the type of account been open)

• Note: The bank account will also attract a maintenance monthly fee.

Validity

• The bank account is valid forever, however, the bank may close the account, if it remains dormant for a long time, etc.
