Obtaining a Category A license
- To obtain a license to keep/acquire a category A firearm, you need to fill up the application form which can be downloaded on line or obtained from the Police Department.
- Once you have completed the application form, submit it along with all other required documents to the Police Department.
- You will receive a reply regarding your request, which is given in the form of an attestation from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of State. It may take up to one month to receive a response.
Renewing your Category A license
- Gather all documents that you will need to present/submit in order for you to renew your Category A license.
- Submit your written request to renew your Category A license along with all other required documents to the Police Department.
- You will receive a reply regarding your request, which is given in the form of an attestation from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of State. It may take up to one month to receive a response.
Obtaining a Category B license
- Gather all documents that you will need to present/submit in order for you to obtain a Category B license.
- Submit your written request to the Ministry of State.
- You will receive a reply regarding your request, which is given in the form of an attestation from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of State. It may take up to one month to receive a response.
For lost or stolen firearms
You must immediately report the lost of your firearm to the Police Department. This must be done within a maximum 48 hours since you found out about the incident. The same procedure applies if the firearm was stolen or any part of the firearm or its ammunition was lost or stolen. In the declaration you must provide precise details regarding the circumstances of the loss or theft. After submitting your statement regarding the incident, you will be given a receipt of declaration of loss or a certificate regarding the reported theft.
Discovered or inherited firearms
If the person who discovered or inherited the firearm does not hold a firearms licence he/she must apply for an authorization to possess a firearm or hand the firearm over to the Police Department within three months of discovering or inheriting the firearm.
Required DocumentsEdit
To obtain a Category A license:
- The authorization application form
- A sworn statement
- A copy of your criminal record, must not be older than 3 months. This may be obtained from the General Court Registry
- A medical certificate, must not be older than 2 weeks, and issued by a doctor authorized to practice in Monaco. The medical certificate must state that you have all of the physical and mental capacities required to posses a firearm
- A sworn, signed statement that states, you have never undergone any psychiatric treatment
- A certificate of ability to use the firearm you hold or will acquire, issued by the Special Shooting Commission
- Proof of registration at the Carabine de Monaco rifle range, signed by its president and stating that you carry out correctly and regularly practice using the type of weapon for which the license is requested.
- A declaration showing how regularly you attend the range, supplied by the Carabine de Monaco
To renew your Category A license
- A written request to renew your Category A license
- A medical certificate, must not be older than 2 weeks, and issued by a doctor authorized to practice in Monaco. The medical certificate must state that you have all of the physical and mental capacities required to posses a firearm
- A copy of your criminal record, must not be older than 3 months. This may be obtained from the General Court Registry
- The firearm bill of sale or a certificate showing its specifications
- A declaration showing how regularly you attend the range, supplied by the Carabine de Monaco
To obtain a Category B license:
- Written request to obtain a Category B license, the request must include the following information:
- Your name(s), surname(s) and address
- Your reason for importing the firearm
- The type, brand, calibre and number of the firearm and, if applicable, the amount of ammunition to be imported

Category A Weapons
To be able to acquire and keep a Category A weapon you must:
- Be a member of the Carabine de Monaco (Monaco Rifle Club) and regularly practice using the type of weapon for which the license is requested.
- Holder of a certificate of aptitude and handling of a weapon
- Have no past history of treatment in a psychiatric unit
Category B Weapons
A license is not necessary to be able to acquire or keep guns in this category in the Principality, unless the weapon has to be imported.

Category B Weapons
These are firearms and their ammunitions used mainly for hunting purposes. A license is not necessary to be able to acquire or keep guns in this category in the Principality, unless the weapon has to be imported.
