Step 1: StudyEdit
  • What Every Driver Must Knowwill help you prepare for the written knowledge test you'll be required to take at a Secretary of State office.Pay special attention to chapters 1 and 6-10.

Step 2: Visit your local secretary of state office and present the required documentationEdit

You'll need to present documentation of a validSocial Security number or letter of ineligibility,U.S. citizenship or legal presence if not a U.S. citizen, identity and Michigan residency.
If you have lost yourSocial Security cardand need a replacement, visit your localSocial Security officeto apply for one.

Step 3: Take the written knowledge, riad signs and vision testsEdit

You must pass the vision, road signs and written knowledge tests and pay $25 before aTemporary Instruction Permit, or TIP, can be issued. A TIP allows you to practice driving with a licensed adult or a certified driver education instructor.

Step 4: Practise DrivingEdit

Practice the basic control and on-the-road driving skills described in theDriving Skills Test Study Guide. A licensed adult must be with you at all times. You must practice for at least 30 days before taking your driving skills test. If you have a valid foreign driver's license, a license from another state or were previously licensed in Michigan, the 30-day practice period may be waived. Although driver education is not required for anyone over 18, it is highly recommended. You will find driver education providers in the phone book's yellow pages under 'driving instruction.' Costs and hours will vary. Not all providers offer driver education for adults, so make sure to ask.

Step 5: Take your driving skills testEdit

Driving skills testing is provided bythird-party testing organizationsacross the state. Testing sites are also listed in the phone book.Cost and hours will vary.

Step 6: Return to a Secretary of State OfficeEdit

After passing skills test, take skills test certificate, TIP and identification to Secretary of State office

License will be issued
No fee
Restrictions may apply for medical conditions
First license - three-year probation

Please note: When applying for an enhanced state ID card, your first and last name and date of birth on your identity and citizenship documents should match. If your current legal name is different from what is shown on your citizenship document, you must present lawful proof of the name change, such as an original marriage license, divorce decree or court order.

InstructionsEdit

If you have avaliddriver's license from another state or Canada and have moved to Michigan, visit a Secretary of State office and:

  • Present documentation of a validSocial Security number or letter of ineligibility,U.S. citizenship or legal presence if not a U.S. citizen, identity and Michigan residency
  • Take avision test and pass the physical standards
  • Have your photograph taken
  • Pay a $25 fee and obtain a Temporary Operator's Permit. The TOP allows you to drive until your Michigan driver's license arrives in the mail.

Need for the DocumentEdit

The Department of State offers the state identification card in a standard and enhanced version. The enhanced ID is an attractive alternative to the standard ID because it allows you tore-enter the U.S.by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean without the need to show additional identity or citizenship documents at the border.

All Secretary of State offices issue the enhanced driver's license and state ID card. Branch offices will also process license and state ID card renewals, address, name or date of birth changes and duplicates - if your card is lost, damaged or stolen.
