Mauritius - Obtain a Join Spouse Residence Permit (Foreigners)

Apply In Person

  1. To apply for a Join Spouse Residence Permit, the applicant should make the application to the Passport and Immigration office. Please view the Passport and Immigration office contact details through this Contact Details.
  2. Visit the Passport and Immigration office and collect the application form to enter Mauritius at the reception or download the form through the Passport and Immigration office website Downloads (please download the form under Permit /Wedding Visa “APPLICATION TO ENTER MAURITIUS”).
  3. The applicant should then complete the application form accurately, then gather and prepare all the required supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below and attach the documents to the application form.
  4. Both the applicant and the spouse should then visit the Passport and Immigration office and make their way to the department of Residence Permit (Spouse Section) and submit the complete application documentation to the official at the service desk.
  5. The official will verify the application dossier of both the applicant and the spouse to check if all the required documents are attached to the application form.
  6. If the attending officer is satisfied that all the documents are in order, the applicant will be issued an acknowledgment receipt with details of the application.
  7. Then the applicant and the spouse will be directed next stage for processing the joint residence permit.
  8. The permit will be processed and issued to the applicant.

Required DocumentsEdit

Female Spouse

  • Birth certificate of the husband who should be a citizen of Mauritius and who has not lost or renounced his Mauritian Citizenship.
  • Husband National Identity Card.
  • Two recent passport size photographs of the applicant + dependent/s (where applicable).
  • Full birth certificate of the applicant duly legalized/ authenticated by competent authority/ bears the seal of “Apostille” of the Hague Convention of 5th October 1961 by the respective country of birth (where applicable).
  • Civil marriage certificate (in case marriage was celebrated outside Mauritius, the Marriage certificate should be legalized/ authenticated by competent authority/ bears the seal of “Apostille” of the Hague Convention of 5th October 1961 by the respective country where civil marriage has been celebrated (where applicable).
  • Divorce decree (Court Judgment) of both parties (where applicable).
  • Death certificate of ex-spouse + previous marriage certificate (where applicable).
  • Recent certificate of character/ casier judiciaire (police clearance certificate) / certificate of previous convictions (less than six months as from the date of issue) which should bear all the names and forenames of the applicant as per her birth certificate issued by the competent authority in the country of origin and residence.
  • Letter from a citizen of Mauritius (husband) who should state in writing whether he supports the applicant and also whether he has/ has not lost or renounced his citizenship of Mauritius. If he has acquired any foreign nationality, a certificate of foreign nationality is to be produced.
  • Photocopy of the data pages of her passport and the dependent/s (where applicable).
  • Full birth certificate of child/ children. If born abroad, certificate/s should be duly legalized/ authenticated by competent authority/ bear the seal of “Apostille” of the Hague Convention of 5th October 1961 by the respective country of birth (where applicable).
  • Any other documents required by the Immigration Officer.


Male Spouse

  • Birth certificate of the wife who should be a citizen of Mauritius and who has not lost or renounced her Mauritian Citizenship
  • Wife National Identity Card.
  • Two recent passport size photographs of the applicant + dependent/s (where applicable).
  • Full birth certificate of the applicant duly legalized/ authenticated by competent authority/ bears the seal of “Apostille” of the Hague Convention of 5th October 1961 by the respective country of birth (where applicable).

  • Documentary evidence of the latest financial means for the upkeep of oneself and that of his family (a recent personal or joint bank statement from a bank in Mauritius or payslip from Mauritius for the last three months)
  • Any other documents required by the Immigration Officer.


Note: All the above-mentioned documents should be submitted in original and a legible Photostat copy each for consideration (original will be returned after verification except the casier judiciaire/ certificate of character/ police clearance certificate/ certificate of previous convictions where the original will be kept at the office).
