Apply In-Person:

  1. To Obtain Certificate of Registration to a Minor Child, the applicant has to approach the Defence and Home Affairs Division in Mauritius - Contact link
  2. The Applicant should download the application form from this link. link
  3. The Applicant must fully complete the form and sign it in the presence of an authorized officer from the Defence and Home Affairs Division to be considered for the certificate.
  4. The applicant is required to attach the required documents such as the original birth certificate, passport and a copy of parent’s identity card and they can be found under the “Required Document” section of this page.
  5. The applicant should also include a signed declaration from the parents of the minor child attesting to their permission for the applicant to act as the legal guardian of the child, as well as their agreement to the terms of the guardianship.
  6. The Applicant should take care to ensure that all information submitted is accurate, current, and complete, as any mistakes or omissions may have an adverse effect on the outcome of their application.
  7. A fee for this procedure has to be paid as per the authority’s request.
  8. Once the application has been submitted, the officer will thoroughly review the form and ensure that all documents accompanying the form are valid and correct.
  9. Upon confirmation that all requirements have been satisfied, the officer will then issue the Certificate of Registration to the Minor Child, thus formally recognizing the child's legal existence and providing the child with the necessary documentation to access services and other important resources.
  10. The processing time for obtaining a Certificate of Registration to a Minor Child is two to three weeks.

  • Full/Unabridged Birth certificate of minor child (duly apostilled if child was born abroad);
  • Full/Unabridged Birth certificates of parents or guardian (duly apostilled);
  • Marriage certificate of parents (if applicable, duly apostilled if marriage was celebrated abroad);
  • Mauritius National Identity Card and Passport of Mauritian parent/s;
  • First five pages of minor’s passport (passport valid for at least 6 months);
  • The certificate of registration or naturalization of the child’s parent, if the latter is a Mauritian citizen by
  • registration or naturalization;
  • Residence permit of minor in Mauritius;
  • Attestation letter from minor’s school in Mauritius;
  • The certificate of foreign nationality of the child’s parent (if applicable); and
  • Photocopies of References’ Mauritius National Identity Card

EligibilityEdit

  • In Mauritius, a minor child can be registered with the Civil Status Office if they are under the age of 16.
  • The child must have two legal parents and at least one of them must be a Mauritian citizen.
  • The parents of the minor must provide a valid birth certificate, the parents’ marriage certificate, the parents’ national identity cards, and a valid passport for the minor.

ValidityEdit

  • A Certificate of Registration issued under the Mauritius Citizenship Act is valid for an indefinite period, but it should be kept safely as no duplicate is issued in case of loss.

  • To obtain a Certificate of Registration to a Minor Child in Mauritius, an application needs to be made to the Defence and Home Affairs Division.
  • The application must be accompanied by the child’s birth certificate, a copy of the parents’ Mauritian identity cards, and a notarized letter of consent from the non-applying parent.
  • The application can be made at the nearest Regional Health Office or at the Defence and Home Affairs Division.
