Mauritius - Apply for a Fire Certificate

Apply In-Person
- To apply for the fire certificate in Mauritius, you should make your application to the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service ( MFRS). Please view the MFRS contact details through this MFRS contacts
- Visit the customer care office of the MFRS at this address: 14 Deschartes Street, Port Louis to obtain the application form or go to any of these fire stations to obtain the application form: Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Mahebourg, ST Aubin, Flacq, Piton, Port Louis, Coromandel, Tamarin, Triolet.
- The application form can also be obtained at the One Stop Shop MyBiz at Pope Hennessey Street Port Louis and you can also download the form through the MFRS website via this Application for fire certificate
- Read the application form keenly and complete the form as instructed.
- Then obtain all the required supporting documents as mentioned under “Documents to be produced” in the application form and attach the documents to the duly filled application form in a single file.
- Then go to the MFRS office and submit the complete application along with all the required documents to the MRFS official at the service desk.
- The official will verify your application to check if the form is complete as required and if you have provided all the necessary required documents.
- If the application is complete as required, the official will complete the section for official use and you will be issued with the acknowledgment receipt of the application.
- The MFRS will then schedule an inspection date of your premises.
- The premises will then be inspected within five days of the receipt of your application by MFRS inspectors and the inspectors will write a report of the inspection findings.
- If the inspection findings prove that the premise satisfies all legal fire safety requirements, the application will be approved and you will be notified of the approval through your contact details and you will be required to pay the appropriate fee for the certificate.
- Upon paying the required fees, the MFRS will prepare the fire certificate and issue it to you within three days after payment of the appropriate fee.
- In case the inspection report finds that the premises do not satisfy all legal fire safety requirements, an improvement notice will be issued to you for compliance.
- Make changes or improve the shortcoming as directed in the improvement notice and apply for the re-inspection using the application form in step two above.
- Upon the re-inspection and if the premises meets the required standards, the fire certificate will be issued to you within three days after making the appropriate payment.
Apply Online
- You can apply for the fire certificate online by visiting the Mauritius government website (E-services portal) through this E-services portal
- On the E-service page, scroll down the page and select “3” to go to page three of the portal.
- On the page, scroll to find “Application for Fire Certificate” and click on the hyperlink to go to the sign-in page.
- Enter your user name and password to sign in if you already have an account and if you are, not a registered user, click on the “Register (new user)” hyperlink to go to the registration page.
- Read the data protection information and click on the “Accept” button to proceed to the next page.
- Confirm your citizenship by either clicking on the “Yes” or “No” button to go to the next page.
- For citizens, you will be required to enter your name and the NIC number and for non-citizens, you will be required to enter your name and passport number then click on the “Next” button to proceed to the next page.
- On this page, enter your user name and password and then click on the “Next” button to go to the next page.
- Enter your email address and then click on the “ Send OTP” button.
- You will be sent an OTP code through your email address, enter the OTP code in the “Insert OTP” box and click on the “Next” button to continue.
- Once you have completed creating your account, go to the E-service portal and find “Application for Fire Certificate” on page 3 and click on the hyperlink to go to the sign-in page.
- Enter your credentials and login and you will be directed to the online application for fire certificate form.
- Complete the application form accordingly by providing all the required information and attach all the required supporting documents, then click on the “Submit” button.
- Upon successful submission of your application, the MFRS will then schedule an inspection date of your premises.
- The premises will then be inspected within five days of the receipt of your application by MFRS inspectors and the inspectors will write a report of the inspection findings.
- If the inspection findings prove that the premise satisfies all legal fire safety requirements, the application will be approved and you will be notified of the approval through your contact details and you will be required to pay the appropriate fee for the certificate.
- Upon paying the required fees, the MFRS will prepare the fire certificate and issue it to you within three days after payment of the appropriate fee.

Application for Fire Certificate
- One (1) copy of the Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Card.
- Two (2) copies of the location plan.
- Two (2) copies of the site plan showing all the buildings forming an integral part of the premises.
- Four (4) copies of the architectural plan of each floor of the premises showing clearly the following details:
- locations of exits and staircases.
- locations of fire extinguishers mentioning their type and capacity & other fire-fighting facilities including hose reels, dry riser, wet riser, sprinkler systems, if available.
- locations of break-glass call points, fire detectors, siren, and control indicator panel.
- Locations of explosive or highly flammable materials or dangerous chemicals used or stored, if available.
- A project write-up describing the premises, its occupancy, fire protection, and safety features.
- Tenant list mentioning their activities carried out and the number of occupants likely to be present at any one time, if applicable.
- Original and one copy of Commissioning/Maintenance Certificate for the fire alarm system stating the relevant standard to which it has been tested after installation, if applicable.
- Original and one copy of Commissioning/Maintenance Certificate for sprinkler system, hose reel, D/W riser, or suppression system, if applicable.
- Original and one copy of Maintenance Certificate for the fire extinguishers.
- Material Safety Data Sheets for any hazardous material or highly flammable materials stored or used, if applicable.
Application for fire certificate for Storage/Use/Handling of Inflammable Gas and Hazardous Chemicals.
- One (1) copy of the Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Card.
- Two (2) copies of the location plan.
- Two (2) copies of the site plan.
- Four (4) copies of the line drawing of the storage area, showing the following details:-
- dimension in meters of the storage area.
- location of exits and staircases.
- location of fire fighting equipment (mentioning the type & capacity of extinguishers).
- location of call points and sirens for any fire alarm system.
- Distance of the nearest building and nearest boundary.
Application for fire certificate for Storage/Use/Handling of Inflammable Liquid and Substances.
- One (1) copy of the Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Card.
- Two (2) copies of the location plan.
- Two (2) copies of the site plan.
- Four (4) copies of the line drawing of the storage area, showing the following details:-
- location of exits and staircases.
- Locations of the means available for fighting the fire.
- Location of the means available for giving warning in the event of a fire.
- Position of the pump, storage tank indicating capacity, pipeline, and vent pipe and their distance from any building and boundary colored with fixed colors as follows; Grey or neutral tint – Existing building Red - Storage tanks, pumps, pipeline.
- Names of streets on which the site abuts and the township in which situated.
- The North point.
- Material Safety Data Sheets for all inflammable liquid and substances stored or used.

- Industrial premises
- Premises where explosives are used or stored and which require a license under the Explosives Act

The application fee is:
- Where the area of the premises does not exceed (1000m2) Rs1,000
- For every additional 500m2 or part thereof Rs300
Re-inspection fee
- 50% of application fee
Fee for issue of the Fire Certificate
- Rs 1100 (Up to 2000 M2)
- Rs 1650 (above 2000 M2)
