Apply In Person

  1. To apply for a Residence Permit for Employment, the application should be made by the employer in Mauritius on behalf of the foreigner or by the foreigner to the Passport and Immigration Office Residence Permit Section.   2. Visit the Passport and Immigration Office Residence Permit Section and collect the application form in person or download the application form through the Passport and Immigration website via this link: Downloads (please download the form under “Permit /Wedding Visa” click on “APPLICATION TO ENTER MAURITIUS” to download the application form)
  3. Read and complete the application form accordingly and then obtain all the required supporting documents and attach the documents to the filled-in form in a single file.
  4. Then visit the Passport and Immigration Office and pay the prescribed application fee at the cashier and obtain the payment receipt.
  5. Upon the payment, submit the application file along with the payment receipt to the official at the Residence Permit Section.
  6. The official will receive the application and issue you the applicant an acknowledgment receipt with the application details.
  7. The application will then be forwarded to the responsible officials at the Passport and Immigration Office Residence Permit Section for processing.
  8. The officials will assess the application and all the provided documents to determine if the application is completed as required. Note that if the documentation is incomplete, the application will not be processed.
  9. If the application meets the required merits, the Passport and Immigration Office will approve that application for processing.
  10. The Passport and Immigration Office will inform you the applicant of the outcome of the application.
  11. Then the Passport and Immigration Office will issue permission for provisional entry valid for one month to the employee to enable him/her to travel to Mauritius.
  12. Upon arriving in Mauritius, within two weeks, the employee should report to the Passport and Immigration Office, Residence Permit Section at this address: 8th Floor, Sterling House, 9-11 Lislet Geoffroy Street, Port Louis to obtain a Residence Permit.


Apply Online

  1. To apply for the Residence Permit for Employment online, you the applicant should make your application through the E-Work Permit Portal. Please visit the portal’s website through this link E-Work Permit Portal.
  2. On the website, get started by entering your user name and password to sign in if you already have an account and if you are not a registered user of the E-Work Permit Portal, click on the “Register Now” button to register your account.
  3. On the new page, read and agree to the Terms and Conditions by selecting the “I Agree” radio button and then click on the “Click here to go to Application Registration Form” button to go to the next page.
  4. On this page, open the dropbox next to the type of application and select your form of registration and then click on the “PROCEED” button to go to the application details page.
  5. Depending on your selection in step 4 above, you will be directed to the appropriate application form. On the first page of the form, complete the form accordingly.
  6. Then upload all the required documents in the appropriate format provided by the system. Note that the size limit is 5 MB.
  7. Then agree to the declaration and submit your registration application and a registration guide will be sent to you through your email address to guide you to the next step.
  8. Then prepare the original documents of the submitted online documents and visit the Employment Division of the MLIRET at this address: Level 11, Victoria House, Port Louis.
  9. The documents along with your National Identification Card (NIC) will be verified by the relevant official at the employment division and then you will be required to sign the application registration form.
  10. Then your application will be evaluated by the ministry and if it meets the required merits, it will be approved and you will be allowed to access the e-work permit portal.
  11. Then visit the e-work permit portal and sign in to your account to apply for the work permit.
  12. After login on to the E-Work Permit Online Portal, you will automatically be directed to the dashboard section where several steps and useful links or documents are provided.
  13. On the dashboard, open the work permit menu and select the “New application” and then select “Within Quota” to be directed to the job grade summary page.
  14. On this page, select the appropriate job grades and click on the “Apply for Work Permit” hyperlink to proceed to the next page. Fill in the appropriate details and click on the “Next” button.
  15. On the new page, complete all the mandatory fields regarding the non-citizen employee and upload any attachments and then click on the “Save and Proceed” button to go to the next step.
  16. Enter the required details regarding the profession of the non-citizen employee and provide the required documents for the basic monthly salary and then click on the “Save and Proceed” button to go to the next step. Note the If Salary is RS 30000 or less, a contract of employment is mandatory and If the Salary is more than RS 30000, a covering letter is mandatory.
  17. On the employer details page, enter the employer details and upload the necessary documentation and then click on the “Save and Proceed” button to go to the next page.
  18. On the requirement agency details page, Enter the details of recruitment details and upload the required document and then click on the “Save and Proceed” button to go to the documents page.
  19. Upload all the required documents and click on the “Save and Proceed” button to go to the declaration page.
  20. Read and agree to the declaration, provide the required details and click on the “submit” button.
  21. Once your application is submitted, click on the “Step 7 – Payment” button to go to the payment page and select the payment mode as either through the Counter Cash or Counter Cheque and click on the “Next” button.
  22. You will then receive a notification email notifying you that your application has been successfully submitted for verification and processing by the ministry.
  23. Then the application for Residence Permit for Employment will be forwarded to the Passport and Immigration Office for the Residence Permit processing.
  24. The official at the Passport and Immigration Office will evaluate the application and if it meets the required standards, the application will be approved for processing.
  25. You will also be notified via the e-work permit portal, once a decision has been made, with regards to the application.
  26. You will also be notified of the approval through your contact details and you will be required to pay the prescribed permit Pay the required permit fee.
  27. Upon payment and If the worker has not yet traveled to Mauritius, a Provisional residence permit will be issued to the company to enable the worker to travel to Mauritius.
  28. When the worker arrives in Mauritius, the employer has to collect the Residence Permit at the Passport and Immigration Office.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • Two recent passport-size photographs of the applicant and his dependents where applicable.
  • Photocopy of the data pages of the applicant's passport.
  • Letter of sponsor from the company or local counterpart
  • Documentary evidence that a work permit has been applied for.
  • Applicant to produce documentary evidence of family relationship, if accompanied by family or any dependent i.e. birth and marriage certificates.
  • Any other document that may be requested by the immigration office.

All the above-mentioned documents should be submitted in original and a legible Photostat copy of each for consideration (original will be returned after verification).

  • A foreign worker needs both a Residence Permit and a Work Permit to work in Mauritius. To facilitate the application process for applicants, a common application form for both permits has been designed and is available on the e-Work Permit Portal. The duly filled-in common application form has to be submitted to the Employment Division through the e-Work Permit Portal. After verification, the application will be forwarded to the Passport and Immigration Office for the Residence Permit. Work Permits will be issued by the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment while Residence Permits will be issued by the Passport and Immigration Office.
