Apply In Person
- To apply for a change of name, you should make your application to the Attorney General’s Office. Please view the Attorney General’s Office contact details through this link Contact details.
- Obtain the application form from the Attorney’s General Office or download the form directly through this link Application for Change of Name and Application for Change of Name of a Minor
- Complete the application form correctly and obtain all the required supporting documents and attach the documents to the application form.
- Visit the Attorney’s General Office and submit your application to the change of name section and pay the processing fee of Rs.1,000 and obtain the payment receipt.
- Your application will be assessed by the relevant authority and thereafter you will receive a letter from the Attorney’s General Office informing you to give notice of your application in the Gazette and Two daily newspapers, one of which at least must be approved by the Attorney General.
- The application will then be assigned to a law officer who will evaluate it to determine its merits. At this stage, the application may be forwarded to the police, requesting them to conduct an inquiry in connection with the reasons put forward by you and the notice must be published three times in the Gazette and in each of the newspapers at your cost.
- Once your application has been verified and at the end of the 28 days when the notice was published in the gazette and newspaper, and there is no rejection to your application or if there was any objection and the Attorney General rules it out and your application is determined to meet all the required merits, the Attorney General will authorize the change.
- Upon the authorization, you will be issued with a Change of Name certificate under the signature of the Attorney-General, and the Attorney General will issue a notice of the authorized Change of Name to be published in the Gazette.
- Thereafter, take your Change of Name certificate to the Registrar of Civil Status Office to change the name in the register.

- Any interested person may oppose the application by filing an objection in writing. The objection must specify the grounds of objection and must submit the application to the Attorney’s General Office within a delay of 28 days from the last publication of the notice given by the applicant in the Gazette and the newspapers. Note that it will be for the Attorney-General to consider whether the grounds of objection are valid or not.
