- To apply for the adoption of a Mauritian child as a foreign citizen, you should make your application to the National Adoption Council of Mauritius. Please view the council’s contact details in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section below.
- Write an adoption demand in a form prescribed by the council requesting to adopt a Mauritius citizen. You can contact the council on how to obtain the demand letter.
- Then submit the adoption demand to the council along with all the required supporting documents and the application fee and the deposit.
- Upon receiving the demand of adoption, the council will verify the application and all the provided documents. At this point, the council may request that you provided additional information and/or documents to prove your application.
- The council will evaluate your application and conduct due diligence to confirm that you are fit to adopt a Mauritius child.
- After the evaluation process, the council will give their decision on the application within 60 days of receiving the demand.
- If the council is not satisfied with your application, the adoption demand will be rejected and you will be issued with the notice of rejection. Note that if you are aggrieved by such a decision, you may appeal to the Judge in Chambers within 21 days of receipt of the notice of rejection.
- If the council is satisfied that you are fit to adopt a child and the demand will benefit the child, the council will authorize you in writing to apply for an adoption order to the Judge in chambers.
- The Judge in Chambers will review your application and if the application satisfies the Mauritius adoption law, the Judge in Chambers will approve your application and issue you the adoption order.
- With the adoption order, proceed and adopt the Mauritius child. Note that after the adoption and after 2 years, you will be required to submit a post-adoption to the National Adoption Council.

- Adoption demand.
- Birth Certificate of the child to be adopted.
- 4 passport-size photographs of the child to be adopted.
- Two comprehensive medical certificates of the child to be adopted. It should inter-alia indicate the child’s general health, his suitability to live in the country of his adopting parents; and whether he suffers from any allergies.
- Birth Certificates of biological parents.
- Marriage Certificate/Divorce decree of biological parents (if applicable).
- Comprehensive medical certificates on biological parents including tests for AIDS and venereal disease.
- 2 passport-size photographs of biological parents.
- Birth Certificates of applicants.
- Marriage Certificate of applicants.
- A report on family background from an official agency accredited to the Government or Government Department of the Country of the adopting parents.
- A report on financial means supported by official documents.
- Record of convictions, if any (extrait de casier judiciaire).
- Certificate of character (certificat de bonne vie et de bonnes moeurs).
- Title deeds (titres de propriete).
- A progress report on any adopted Mauritian child by an official agency accredited to the Government (if applicable).
- In case of sterility, to produce a medical certificate.
- Certificate from a reliable person to take charge of the child/children in case of accident or mortality of the adopting parents – “Certificat de Prise en Charge”.

InstructionsEdit
- The adopting parents must be at least 15 years older than the adoptive child. However, if the adoptee is the natural child of one of the parents, then the age difference is reduced to 10 years. However, the judge can bypass these requirements if there is a good reason for such action.
