Apply In Person:
- To apply for the adoption of a foreign person as a Mauritius citizen, you should make your application in writing to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Please view the PMO contact details in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section below.
- Prior to making your application to the PMO, you should initiate the adoption process of the foreign national you wish to adopt in that foreign country.
- Then submit your written adoption application to the PMO alongside all the relevant documents that will support your application.
- The PMO will then make an inquiry on you to determine whether you are socially, psychologically, and economically fit to raise the foreign child.
- Upon the inquiry by the PMO and it is determined that you are fit to adopt a foreign child, proceed and complete the adoption process in the foreign country of the adoptee.
- Once you have completed the adoption process, submit an adoption petition before the Judge in Chambers in Mauritius.
- The Judge chambers will assess all the documents that you have provided and ascertain the adoption.
- The chambers will then write an adoption order and forward it to the PMO.
- Upon receiving the adoption order, the PMO will issue you a Certificate of Mauritian Nationality, which will be conclusive evidence that the minor child is a citizen of Mauritius as from the date of adoption.

- Birth certificate of the adopted child.
- Letter of acceptance from biological parents.
- Birth certificate of adopter or adopters in case of joint adoption.
- Adoption Order.
- Certificate of foreign Nationality of adopter or adopters, if applicable.
- Birth certificate of a couple.
- Marriage certificate.
- Divorce decree (if any).
- National Identity card of a couple.
- Medical Certificate from a medical practitioner certifying that fertility treatment undergone has been unsuccessful and the chances of conception are insignificant or nil.
- Medical Certificate from a medical practitioner certifying that the couple has no contagious disease.
- Proof of financial means.
- Certificate of Character of the couple.
- Copy of Passport of the couple.
- Proof of residence.
- Letter of reference from 2 persons.
- Certificate Prise en Charge/Letter of undertaking in case of a mishap of Adoptive Parents.
- Copy of residence permit (applicable to foreigners).
