Apply In-Person
- The applicant will need to visit the nearest ServiceCanada Centre, use the following link to find the nearest centre Link. If the SIN was stolen, the applicant will need to report it to the nearest police station.
- The applicant will need to bring ID documents, as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant will need to show their ID documents and during the same visit, they will receive a confirmation letter with their SIN number.
- The applicant will not receive a SIN card, but the confirmation letter will have the SIN number, keep this safe.
Apply by Mail
- The applicant will need to mail original copies of their ID documents to the nearest ServiceCanada centre, find the mailing address here: Link.
- If the SIN was stolen, the applicant will need to report it to the nearest police station.
- Mail documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page. The applicant will receive their confirmation letter by mail within a week.
- The applicant will not receive a SIN card, but the confirmation letter will have the SIN number, keep this safe.

- The applicant must have a registered SIN.
- The applicant must be 12 years of age or older.

The applicant does not have to pay fees to retrieve their SIN number.

A Social Insurance Number is valid forever.
