Transfer ownership of a vehicle:
- Prepare the following documents:
- Logbook signed by seller, buyer and witness
- Insurance in the name of the buyer
- Photo copy of the IDs of the 3 parties (not needed if transfer is made on VEH 50)
- Things that you must remember:
- Check whether the vrt is due - Link
- Any contraventions, CVA and any other fees due must be paid before ownership of the vehicle is transferred.
- Go to the Land Transport Directorate Office in Hall B between 7.30 am and 12.00 pm (Monday to Friday) to apply for the procedure.
- The buyer, seller and their witnesses must sign and complete the back part of the Vehicle Registration Certificate. The buyer must also produce an insurance certificate commencing from the date of transfer and if the road licence is expired a valid VRT has to be submitted. (If Applicable)
The buyer and seller may opt to fill in application form VEH 50 instead of signing on the vehicle registration certificate. In this case, the copies of the Identity cards will not be needed for the transfer of ownership. The application form VEH 50 shall be signed by the seller, buyer and the witnesses. The witness to the signatures will be signing and certifying/confirming that the signatures of both the buyer and seller took place by the buyer and seller respectively in the witnesss presence.
If the vehicle is co-owned by the husband and wife, then both signatures are required. The spouse must also produce a copy of the Identity Card (if application form VEH 50 is filled in, there will be no need of the copy of the Identity Card)
If the seller or buyer happen to be a Limited Liability Company, a declaration signed by the company secretary will be required. The declaration must state the date when the board resolution was taken and confirm that the directors do not object to the transfer of the vehicle. It must also confirm the name of the person who will sign for the said transfer. The Board of Directors can authorize either any Director or representative to call personally with his/her I.D Card. If the application form VEH 50 is filled in, these documents will not be required to be presented.
Transfer ownership of a vehicle with a lost/stolen registration certificate:
For vehicles with lost/stolen registration certificate then the transfer must be affected on the Transfer Form VEH 50. The seller will be requested to make a declaration regarding the loss of the Registration Certificate.
An administration fee of 8.00 for the declaration and an administration fee of 10.00 for the new Registration Certificate will be charged.
Issuance of plates during transfer of ownership
For the SELLER: A seller has two options, either sell the vehicle with a non-personalised plates or if the vehicle has personalised plates under the name of the seller, he/she may garage these plates and new plates will be assigned to the new owner. At this stage the buyer may either choose to take a pair of non-personalised plates or requests personalised plates.
For the BUYER: The buyer must complete Section C of Form VEH 50 if the vehicle being purchased has an extra third plate and you want to keep the plate.
- To apply, go to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Unit Office between 07:30 and 12:00 from Monday to Friday.
- Submit a completed Form VEH 06.
- If the required set of plates are available, you can book the plates by paying 23.25 using the new computerized system, (The balance 176.75 will be paid upon issuing of plates.
- To collect the plates you have to produce the old plates together with the Insurance Certificate expiring in the new month of renewal (depending on the first letter), the Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (if required) and VEH06 duly filled in.
