Mali - Request for Extract for Marriage Certificate

Within Mali
- The couple should visit the town hall office, where the intended marriage will take palace, with the supporting documents (listed below) and express their interest to the deputy may or/person in charge of civil status.
- Collect necessary forms and accurately fill them;
- Make all necessary payments; at the cashier desk, upon which you will be issued with an acknowledgment slip.
- Attach all the required documents (listed below); and
- Submit the documents to be verified and processed.
- After notifying the registrar of your intentions to marry, applicants are required to wait for a specific period of days to allow those with antagonistic information come and register their complaints;
- Also during this period the person in charge of civil status opens an investigation to determine, among other things, whether:
- The man is already married, and if he does not live in a monogamous regime with the first wife.
- The woman is not married, or is not previously engaged.
- The woman is not a minor.
- After the elapse of investigation period and no one has forward any complaints to stop wedding, applicants now schedule time with the Registrar of Marriages for their wedding
- Please note the legal time limit for celebrating the marriage is within fifteen (15) clear days unless there is a derogation and if there is no opposition.
- After the wedding ceremony, a Mali Marriage Certificate is issued to the couple by the registrar.
- Married couples also automatically receive a Family Book (livro de registro familiar) from the registrar. This is a booklet which serves as an official record of the marriage and subsequent events in the family such as births, deaths, divorce or name changes.
Abroad Application
- The couple should visit the Mali embassy/consulate in their foreign host country with the supporting documents within 15 days before the wedding.
- Please note that some embassy required the applicant to book an appointment with them first before visiting the embassy.
- Collect the application form from the embassy office or download it via the embassy website if available.
- Submit the completed form and pay the required processing fee, Note: that the processing fee varies with embassies.
- You will be notified of the outcome by the embassy by phone/ mail, revisit the embassy office with your identification document and collect the marriage certificate and Family Book , the certificate should be filled and signed by a the authorized official performing the marriage and by the couple at the wedding ceremony date.
Please Note
Applicants who want their processed marriage Certificate sent to them by post are advised to attach one of the following to their request(s):
- A registered self-addressed envelope with the appropriate stamps (letter recommendée);
- A pre-paid envelope from any recognized courier service provider.
- Please note Not all embassies offer the post/mail return service (please consult with the embassy)

- Extracts of the birth certificate of both the future spouses.
- Original Identity cards of both future spouses
- copies of identity cards of witnesses
- Death certificate In the case of widowed person)- or
- Divorce Decree Absolute. (In the case of divorce person indicating current status)- Copy and original
- Evidence of termination of any prior marriage’s must be presented (originals or certified copies only)
- A sworn affidavit/statement ( if you are a Foreigner)
- Valid passport (if you are a foreigner)
- A Certificate of Celibacy (Um certificado de celibato) this affidavit is available at the Embassy in the country of origin and must be executed before a Consular Officer.
- Any other document request for by the civil registry office/embassy office.

- Free for the extract of the marriage certificate (copy: 100 FCFA).
- 1000 FCFA for the family record book

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
- The certificate gives you the eligibility to inherit your spouse’s property and also jointly own properties without fear of being denied the right to share the matrimonial property when your spouse dies.
- The certificate enables your spouse joining your health benefits
- The certified is needed when Applying for foreign visa as one of the couple is working in a foreign country
- The certificate is needed when applying for passport and/or some other such document, which contains the name of one’s spouse.
