Apply In-Person

  1. The declarant make the declaration before a judge if made in Mali, or in a Malian embassies or consulates abroad if made outside the country.
  2. The judges and offices representing Mali abroad then transmit the application file to the Malian Ministry of Justice.
  3. Your application file will then be forwarded to the judicial/public authority for validation and decision making by the minister of Justice within a period of 12 months.
  4. After the expiry of the one-year period and in the absence of opposition from the government, the Ministry of Justice will approve the declaration and sign the copy of the declaration.
  5. You will then be notified of the outcome of your application by letter/phone by the judge's office or the Malian embassies/consulates with whom you had file the application with, if your request is denied no reason will be given for the refusal to grant the certificate.
  6. Upon being notified of the approval, re-visit the judge's office or the Malian embassies/consulates with your identification document and calm the citizenship certificate on payment of all required fee.

EligibilityEdit

Applicants should meet the following criteria

  • He/she should attained the full age of eighteen years unless, as a minor, he/she benefits from the naturalisation granted to his parent.
  • He /she should have continues resided in Mali for at least ten years at the time of presenting his/her application.
    • However, this period is reduced to 5 years for the applicant having rendered exceptional services in Mali and also for the child born in Mali to foreign parents
  • He/she should be of good character and morals.
  • He/she should not have been sentenced either to a term of more than one year of imprisonment, not expunged by rehabilitation, for an offence against ordinary law leading, according to Malian law, to a conviction for serious crimes or a penalty of two months to five years imprisonment or for one of the correctional offences, not expunged by rehabilitation, or for possession of stolen goods, swindling or breach of trust.
    • Note: Sentences passed abroad may not been taken into consideration; In that case, the decree of naturalisation shall be pronounced after recommendation by the Supreme Court.
  • He/she should justify his/her assimilation in the Malian community.

  • A minor aged 15 can apply for naturalization with the authorization of the person or body exercising parental authority or guardianship.

Important note

  • Within one year after making the declaration, the Government may by decree oppose such acquisition of citizenship by Naturalization.
  • Any person who has acquired citizenship by registration may be deprived of that citizenship if the registration has been obtained by means of fraud, false representation or the concealment of any material fact.
  • The validity of a declaration can always be contested by the Public Prosecutor or by any interested person, unless the civil court has already ruled by a decision which has become final.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • Citizenship is the status of a person recognized under the custom or law of a sovereign country as a member. Each country is free to determine the conditions under which it will recognize persons as its citizens, and the conditions under which that status will be withdrawn.
  • Under Article 237 of the Persons and Family Code state that the acquisition of Malian nationality by naturalization by foreigners as long as he/she (Declarant) meets the requirements as set by the Mali citizenship act.
