Malawi - Register a Birth
ProcedureEdit
- After the birth of a child parents or guardians receive a birth report
- They then fill in the prescribed particulars in the report.
- They append their signatures to
- They then lodge in the birth report to the Registration Officer of the district where the birth occurred.
- The registrar then enters the birth in the birth register and offers a birth certificate

- The Malawian National Registration Act was passed in 2009 makes birth registration compulsory and universal.
- To register a birth, a parent or other representative must complete a birth report and deliver a copy of it to the district registrar.
- After shes giving birth, a mother can acquire a birth report during her postnatal check-ups or when she reports for the babys first immunizations.

- It is compulsory for every child born in Malawi to be registered.
- A father and mother must register a childs birth within six weeks.
- In the parents absence, others must take responsibility for registering the birth of a child, including the head of the household in which the child was born, anyone who was present at the childs birth, or anyone in charge of the child

- Without a birth certificate in Malawi, children are at higher risk of such abuses as child trafficking and early marriage. They are also likelier to have limited access to social services such as healthcare, and an education.

- A birth report/ certificate is needed during child adoption.
- A birth report/ certificate is used in acquiring Malawian identification documents like the Identity Card, Drivers permit and passport.
