ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. The applicant can apply in person by visiting Malawi’s foreign mission or at the Regional Offices in Mzuzu and Lilongwe and Immigration Headquarters in Blantyre. Contact Link
  2. The application form can be collected at the Immigration office or downloaded here: Application form
  3.  The applicant has to fill the form and submit it along with the supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page, to the immigration Headquarters or the Regional Immigration Offices.
  4. Pay required fee. Please check the “Fees” section of this page for more details.
  5.  After successful submission, the application goes to the Approval Committee for consideration, then the Minister for final decision.
  6. The applicant will be formally notified if the application has been approved or rejected.
  7.  If approved, then the applicant will be required to pay the appropriate fees within 30 days from the date of notification.
  8. It usually takes between 14 to 30 working days to process a Malawian work permit.
  9. After that, the work permit will be sent to the applicant through any applicable means.

EligibilityEdit

Any foreigner intending to take up employment in Malawi can apply.

FeesEdit

  •  Non-governmental organization K120,000.00.
  •  Religious organization K120,000.00.
  • Reverends, pastors, priests and such class of persons K30,000.00.
  •  Others K120,000.00.
  •  Non-refundable application fee K10,000.00.


ValidityEdit

The work permit is valid for at least 6 months and not more than 2 years in the first issuance.

InstructionsEdit

  • The work permit is issued to persons before they enter Malawi for the purpose of taking up specified employment in Malawi.
  •  The organization has the responsibility to apply for the permit on behalf of the applicant.
  •  It is a requirement for work permit applications to be lodged with the department of Immigration while the applicant is outside Malawi to take up employment once the application has been approved.
  •  All applicants for a new work permit are required by law to wait outside Malawi until the application has been approved
  • It is a criminal offense under the Immigration Act to work or be employed in Malawi without a Temporary Employment Permit/ work permit.

  •  Nature of employer's business.
  •  Period for which permit is required.
  • Job description of the employment being offered.
  • Title of the post in Malawi for which the applicant is being considered.
  •  Details of previous experience.
  •  Date of issue of the first Permit held.
  •  The annual salary of the applicant.
  •  Name of applicant (in full).
  •  Nationality of applicant.
  •  Date and place of birth of the applicant.
  • Passport details of the applicant.
  •  Intended date of arrival in Malawi.
  •  Place of entry.
  •  Applicant’s Criminal record Address outside Malawi at which he/she now, or did last reside.

Any foreigner offered work in an organization in Malawi is required to apply for a work permit/ Temporary Employment Permit before taking up work in Malawi.

  • A work permit can be renewed twice through submission of a Temporary employment permit Renewal Application Form and supporting documents to the Immigration offices.
  • An application renewal must be submitted 3 months before the expiry of the permit.
