Registration for Student (Locally Trained Nurse)
- For a nurse/midwife to practice in Malawi he or she should be licensed with the Nursing & Midwives Council of Malawi. It is the responsibility of the council to ensure that all nurses that are within its jurisdiction meet a certain level of competence before starting their practice. Thus, licensing examination and clinical placement are administered to the health practitioner to ascertain that the applicant meets all qualifications Council Contacts
- Nurses/midwives who wish to be entered into the council Nursing/midwife roll/register are required to show that they have attained the required competency by council standards.
- Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the council to begin the registration process.
- Higher Education Institutions shall submit a list of potential candidates for all cadres/programs to the Health professionals’ competency assessment and licensure to the council's office 30 days prior to the examination date for indexing.
- Applicants will be required to complete the indexing application form for students within Malawi issued at the council offices or, downloadable at the council website Council’s Downloads.
- Applicants should strictly follow all instructions as outlined on the application form while completing the form and it should be attested/signed by the head of the institution or relevant authority and stamped.
- The completed form attached to all relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below must be returned/forwarded to the Council within 30 days before the commencement of the council examination and attachment/internship.
- On receipt of the candidate's application and proof of payment, it will be reviewed by the registrar and the candidate will be issued with a registration number, which should be used in all future communication with the examination directorate.
- Sit a pre-registration Nursing and Midwifery council’s Examination. The date and time of the examination will be communicated to the applicant in due course. Only successful applicants will proceed to the next step i.e clinical placement.
- A candidate who fails the examinations can apply three times (after the first attempt) for re-examination within two years, If the candidate couldn't pass the exam within two years, he/she must take additional training and must bring pieces of evidence from Higher Education Institutions regarding the additional training.
- The candidates shall be issued with a Log Book for rotation and a Provisional License and Code for National Service registration.
- Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, candidates will be eligible for registration as professional health practitioners; return the Log Book and Provisional License to the council office for verification.
- The registrar shall document candidates’ records, a list of simulated patients, a list of assessment centers, a list of assessors, a list of supervisors, a list of invigilators, a scoring sheet, and other relevant documents.
- The application shall also be accompanied by proof of payment of the license fees which will be specified by the Council during the application period.
- After the successful dossier assessment phase is completed the Registration Certificate,CPD logbook, badge and Practising license are awarded. This usually takes a period of 3 days.
- The applicant will be notified to collect his Registration Certificates and Practising license via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
Registration of Nursing and Midwifery Trained Abroad
- Any nursing and midwifery personnel who wish to work or study in Malawi is requested to apply in writing to the registrar for registration.
- Upon receipt of the application, the Registrar will issue the applicant the following application forms 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D, these forms are also downloadable via the council website: Council’s Downloads.
- The Registrar will request the applicant to complete form 1A and will request him/her to forward the other forms as follows:-
- Form B to training institution where one trained in general nursing
- Form C to training institution where one trained in midwifery.
- Form D to the Regulatory body in the country of origin.
- Where regulatory functions are under institutions other than the regulatory body, the applicant may request the such institution to complete form 1D.
- The applicant is informed to submit form 1A directly to the registrar whilst other forms are submitted by the relevant authorities directly to the registrar to maintain professional confidentiality and safeguard the authenticity of the documents.
- The applicant’s attention is drawn to the requirement on the need to obtain a work permit before orientation is organized by the council.
- The applicant is requested to attend the personal interviews arranged in liaison with the registration officer on schedule once a week on Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
- During the scheduled interview, the applicant will be required to submit the following documents to be assessed for authenticity and indexing; This will be done in a company of a lecturer from the hosting training institution and must be before the commencement of the attachment.

- Transcripts and Validations (in sealed envelopes)
- Where transcripts are not available, the applicant is given a set of forms, some of which should be sent to the appropriate institution a file is then opened for each applicant.
- The Council will upon successful completion of the indexing process issue a letter of authorization to the applicant as well as the health facility where the training institution will attach the student for the internship; a Log Book for rotation and a Provisional License and a Code for National Service registration.
- The applicant shall be required to pay an indexing fee of 100 USD (revised from time to time) Payment can either be made before (bring proof of payment) or on the day of the interview.
- The applicant will be required to procure the indexing package of the regulatory materials as stipulated by NMCM from time to assist the student to fit into the system.
- The applicant will be required to undergo a three-month practical orientation program (clinical placement) in a Teaching, Regional, or any hospital accredited by the Council to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Malawi.
- Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, the applicant will be eligible for registration as a professional health practitioner, and return the Log Book and Provisional License to the council office for verification.

Students Training In Malawi
- Authentic copy of the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent or notification of MSCE results slip. Testimonials from Secondary Schools are not acceptable.
- Copy of national identification card.
- An electronic copy of a passport-size photograph with an applicant’s name and one hard copy of a passport-size photograph with the applicant’s name written at the back of the same stapled on the top left corner of the completed form.
- Evidence of having paid for indexing fee as revised from time to time.
- Evidence of having the MSCE certificate verified by the Malawi National Examination Board (MANEB).
- Registration certificate(s) if already registered with this Council.
For International Trained Students
- One passport-size photograph (hard and electronic copy)
- Academic Transcript (Inclusion of theory and practical)
- Objectives for the clinical placement in Malawii
- Identification letters from the training institution in the country of origin and another from the training institution in Malawi.
- Study permit from the immigration office.

EligibilityEdit
Applicants should meet the following criteria to be eligible;
- To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
- To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
- To have attained one of the following academic degrees:
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Malawi’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Malawi, which the council recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the council.
- A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health (nursing division) or an equivalent degree.

- Indexing fee of 100 USD for International Trained Students.
ValidityEdit
- The validity of the license/ registration certificate shall be mentioned on the document and shall be subjected to renewal and payment of an annual practice fee, this should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
- Failure to renew your license after 6 months will result in the cancellation of your registration status. You will need to begin the registration process all over.
